A paean to authentic wines and a New York Times Best Wine Book of the Year from the James Beard Award-winning author of Reading Between the Wines. What makes a wine worth drinking? As celebrated wine writer Terry Theise explains in this gem of a book, answering that seemingly simple question requires us to look beyond what’s in our glass to consider much bigger questions about beauty, harmony, soulfulness, and the values we hold dear. Most of all, Theise shows, what makes a wine worth drinking is its authenticity. When we choose small-scale, family-produced wine over the industrially produced stuff, or when we opt for subtle, companionable wines over noisy, vulgar ones, we not only experience their origins with the greatest possible clarity and detail—we also gain a new perspective on ourselves and the world we inhabit. In this way, artisanal wine is not only the key to good drinking; it is also the key to a good life. An unforgettable literary journey into the heart and soul of wine, What Makes a Wine Worth Drinking is a gift to be cherished from a writer “whose id is directly connected to his mouth” (Eric Asimov, The New York Times). Winner of the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards Chairman’s Award A “Best Wine Gift” by WineSpeed “Grown-up wine writing, full of emotion . . . and, in these dangerously cynical times, exactly what we wine enthusiasts—we human beings—need.”—The World of Fine Wine “Theise’s fans, as well as those just meeting him for the first time, will revel as he leads us on an existential tour of wine.”—Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

A paean to authentic wines, describing their fundamental qualities and their power to improve and enrich our lives, from "one of the wine world's most intriguing personalities" (New York Times). Monseigneur le Vin is a distinctly cheeky but highly informative French introduction to the art of drinking wine. Originally published in French in 1927 as part of a set of promotional books for French wine distributor Nicolas, Monseigneur le Vin is a lovely illustrated jewel of a wine primer brought back into print. The book is perfectly relevant to today's wine lovers, charmingly presented: wine information like bouquet, color, and taste profile is essentially the same today, and Montorgueil's reverence for wine is delivered with an élan and is oh-so-very French, with observations like "A full-bodied red wine wants to be laid on its side and made cozy." Delightful and informative, Monseigneur le Vin is sure to appeal to new and experienced wine lovers alike.

Wine Drinking Culture In France written by Marion Demossier and has been published by University of Wales Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-15 with Social Science categories.

This book provides a new interpretation of the relationship between consumption, drinking culture, memory and cultural identity in an age of rapid political and economic change. Using France as a case-study it explores the construction of a national drinking culture -the myths, symbols and practices surrounding it- and then through a multisited ethnography of wine consumption demonstrates how that culture is in the process of being transformed. Wine drinking culture in France has traditionally been a source of pride for the French and in an age of concerns about the dangers of 'binge-drinking', a major cause of jealousy for the British. Wine drinking and the culture associated with it are, for many, an essential part of what it means to be French, but they are also part of a national construction. Described by some as a national product, or as a 'totem drink', wine and its attendant cultures supposedly characterise Frenchness in much the same way as being born in France, fighting for liberty or speaking French. Yet this traditional picture is now being challenged by economic, social and political forces that have transformed consumption patterns and led to the fragmentation of wine drinking culture. The aim of this book is to provide an original account of the various causes of the long-term decline in alcohol consumption and of the emergence of a new wine drinking culture since the 1970s and to analyse its relationship to national and regional identity.

‘A very funny book to dip in and out of and would make the perfect present for the wine bore in your life’ – The Independent, Drinks Books of the Year. For people who wouldn’t know a Romanée-Conti from a bad-boy Argentine Malbec, or a glass of Château d’Yquem from a can of orange Tango, I’ve Bought It, So I’ll Drink It is the essential book. Based on the authors’ acclaimed wine blog Sediment, it has almost nothing to do with fine wines and almost everything to do with the social, financial, marital, personal, conceptual and hardware issues surrounding middle-class wine drinking. Covering such vital topics as getting cheap wine from corner shops; how to ingratiate yourself with a wine merchant; handling wine in a box as well as in a five-litre plastic flagon with a tap; dealing with pichets, duff corkscrews and unbreakable tumblers; wine drinking in the Georgian era; and including an hommage to le Piat d’Or – this is a book that wrestles wine out of the bottle, pins it down and makes it tell the unpalatable truth. CJ and PK – widely, and perhaps even correctly, believed to be Charles Jennings and Paul Keers – have broken away from the conventional world of wine-writing, with its secret vocabulary and insufferable air of superiority. For those of us who so often fail to detect notes of citrus and caramel but mainly get a hint of alcohol with a grapey finish, I’ve Bought It, So I’ll Drink It is as refreshing as a glass of decent Muscadet on a summer’s day. Winner of the John Avery Award, André Simon Food and Drink Book Awards 2014 Sediment: ‘The finest wine blog available to humanity’ – Guardian critic Nicholas Lezard ‘To be blunt, the specialist wine world could do with a bit more of their disarming honesty’ – London Evening Standard
