It's a summer night on the plains, a night for dreamers and lovers, a night for drive-in movies. In Chickasa, Oklahoma, and Turkey, Texas, Main Street is dark and shuttered. Out on the prairie there flickers the first reel of the movie. This is the boundless nostalgia of the drive-in, of the serene confidence of the United States in the 50s, when Korea was a far-off land and Vietnam wasn't on the map, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House, and Edward Hopper captured the spirit of the age. It was remembered again in The Last Picture Show and by the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, when he sang My Home Town. There were 6,000 drive-ins across the Union then. There are 547 now. Idaho has The Spud, Texas had The Trail, and even New York City has the walk-in show in Bryant Park. The drive-in was born in 1933 in Camden, New Jersey, when an enterprising gas station owner projected a movie on his wall to entertain impatient customers. Since then the drive-in has had its ups and downs, latterly torn down to be replaced by shopping malls and tatty developments. But that zeitgeist will not die, and in Drive-Ins Joan Liftin has rung again the town bell that remembers it. There are many who will agree with her, and shake their heads at the loss of the apparent innocence of that age. This is now a very different world in which her photographs recall the ephemeral evenings at the drive-in, of the heart-breaking back row kisses, of the beer-topped coolers and popcorn, and the giant images of Monroe, Clift, and Gable bestriding the wilderness. Joan Liftin took these photographs over 20 years, some off-hand, some desultory, some with a startling, mesmeric evocation of what the drive-in was and meant to a generation of Americans.

A primarily American institution (though it appeared in other countries such as Japan and Italy), the drive-in theater now sits on the verge of extinction. During its heyday, drive-ins could be found in communities both large and small. Some of the larger theaters held up to 3,000 cars and were often filled to capacity on weekends. The history of the drive-in from its beginnings in the 1930s through its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s to its gradual demise in modern-day America is thoroughly documented here: the patent battles, community concerns with morality (on-screen and off), technological advances (audio systems, screens, etc.), audiences, and the drive-in's place in the motion picture industry.

There were 105 drive-in theaters within a couple of miles of Route 66. Join drive-in historian Michael Kilgore on a historic trip down the Mother Road, as he presents the sometimes quirky story of each and every ozoner along the way.Packed with dozens of photos and details never before printed in any book, Drive-Ins of Route 66 is a must for any drive-in enthusiast or Route 66 fan."The famed Route 66 is a road well travelled over many years. Stretching across eight states, along the way it has housed motels and diners with their iconic neon signs, many of which have previously been recorded in books. Now author and researcher Michael Kilgore brings to life another aspect of the Mother Road: the Drive-In Movie Theatre. These were popular for several decades, and there are still a small number still in operation. Michael takes us on a journey, state by state, through small towns to the larger cities and their suburbs. Over 100 drive-in theatres are given a well-researched individual appraisal, from their inception and life, giving pleasures to tens of thousands, leading to (in many cases) their sad demise. An added pleasure for the reader is the inclusion of photographs which show the individuality of many of the drive-In theatres featured."So make yourself comfortable, open the pages and allow Michael, as your driver and guide, to take you on wonderful journey of exploration, to experience what pleasures could (and still can) be had beneath a starlite sky." - Ken Roe, Theatre Editor, Cinema Treasures

Handbook On The Economics Of Leisure written by Samuel Cameron and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with Social Science categories.

This interdisciplinary Handbook combines both mainstream and heterodox economics to assess the nature, scope and importance of leisure activities. Surprisingly, the field of leisure economics is not, thus far, a particularly integrated or coherent one. In this Handbook a wide ranging body of international scholars get to grips with the core issues, taking in the traditional income/leisure choice model of textbook microeconomics and Becker's allocation of time model along the way. They expertly apply economics to some usually neglected topics, such as boredom and sleeping, work–life balance, dating, tourism, health and fitness, sport, video games, social networking, music festivals and sex. Contributions from further afield by Veblen, Sctivosky and Bourdieu also feature prominently. Applying a mix of both theoretical and empirical data, undergraduate students in modules on sport/leisure economics as well as sport/leisure management will find this important resource invaluable.
