Certain activities and events both inside and outside a vehicle can distract drivers and lead to degraded performance. New technologies- such as entertainment, communication, and driver assistance systems- play a significant role in distraction. This unique volume defines driver distraction, discusses various causes, and explains how to measure acceptable and unacceptable levels of distraction. Several chapters address measurement techniques based on performance and epidemiological studies. Most importantly, the text explores ways to mitigate driver distraction as well as countermeasures including vehicle design and effective legislation.

It is estimated that, in the United States, around 20 percent of all Police-reported road crashes involve driver distraction as a contributing factor. This figure increases if other forms of inattention are considered. Evidence (reviewed in this volume) suggests that the situation is similar in other countries and that driver distraction and inattention are even more dangerous as contributing factors in crashes than drug and alcohol intoxication. Having a solid evidence-base from which to develop injury countermeasures is a cornerstone of road-safety management. This book adds to the accumulating evidence-base on driver distraction and inattention. With 24 chapters by 52 authors from more than 10 countries, it provides important new perspectives on the definition and meaning of driver distraction and inattention, the mechanisms that characterize them, the measurement of their effects, strategies for mitigating their effects, and recommendations for further research. The goal of this book is to inspire further research and countermeasure development to prevent and mitigate the potentially adverse effects of driver distraction and driver inattention, and, in doing so, to save lives.

Driver distraction worldwide results in an estimated 340,000 roadway deaths annually, causing concern for legislators and traffic planners. Research institutions study driver distraction accidents on roadways and railroad crossings, most of which are preventable. The results of such studies appear in reports, journals, and conference proceedings, often nebulous and difficult for a reader to locate and comprehend. Most cover light personal vehicles and commercial motor vehicle driver distraction. This book focuses on transit bus driver distractions and is an essential guide for transit bus agencies, academicians, and professionals involved in transportation safety. It is also beneficial for the public and private transportation industries and academicians to focus on the public transit safety system. This book is a must for every transit bus agency worldwide and professionals involved in transportation safety.

Driver Behaviour And Training written by Dr Lisa Dorn and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-28 with Business & Economics categories.

Research on driver behaviour over the past three decades has clearly demonstrated that the goals and motivations a driver brings to the driving task are important determinants for driver behaviour. The objective of the book, and of the International Conference on Driver Behaviour and Training on which it is based, is to describe and discuss recent advances in the study of driving behaviour and driver training. It bridges the gap between practitioners and theoreticians investigating driving behaviour, from a number of different perspectives and related disciplines. A major focus is to consider how driver training needs to be adapted to take into account individual differences, in order to raise awareness of how these may contribute to unsafe driving behaviour. From this it goes on to promote the development of driver training courses that consider all the skills that are essential for road safety. The effect of road environment and in-vehicle technology is also debated with reference to driver responses. The book is timely in its aim of defining new approaches to improving road safety based on many years of empirical research on driver behaviour. The contributing researchers and professionals are encouraged to consider the applications of their work for reducing the risk of crash involvement, with a strong emphasis on driver training. The readership includes researchers from a variety of different academic backgrounds, practitioners from regulatory authorities, vehicle manufacturers and organisations concerned with improving road safety.
