Les domaines respectifs de la chasse et de la protection des espèces et des espaces peuvent sembler à priori incompatibles. La chasse consiste à prélever des espèces sauvages dans le milieu naturel. Au contraire, les espaces naturels ont pour objet la préservation d'espèces et d'espaces menacés. Or, le milieu naturel en général, et les espèces protégés en particulier, sont des milieux vivants, dont l'évolution peut s'avérer problématique, non seulement à l'égard des activités humaines, mais également pour leur propre pérennité. La réalisation de l'équilibre Homme/Nature devient alors une priorité. La chasse se révèle le moyen le plus approprié, car le plus naturel, pour mettre en oeuvre ces équilibres. Les obligations internationales de la France, dans le domaine de l'environnement, l'impliquent désormais dans la réalisation de ces équilibres. Néanmoins, le droit de la chasse ignore encore largement la prise en compte de la biodiversité. Pour atteindre cet objectif, de profondes réformes sont nécessaires. Il s'agit d'adapter la chasse, en l'intégrant dans la gestion des espaces naturels et en la basant sur le principe de l'équilibre durable d'une ressource renouvelable, mais rare.
