Although there is a strong and growing literature in the two areas of desistance and addiction recovery, they have developed along parallel pathways with little systematic assessment of the empirical evidence about the co-occurrence of the relationship or how one area can learn from the other. This book aims to fill that gap by bringing together emerging literature on the relationship between offending and substance use. Instead of focusing on the active period of its onset and persistence, this book examines the mechanisms that support desistance, addiction recovery, and the common themes of reintegration and rehabilitation. With contributions from a wide range of international experts in the fields of desistance and addiction recovery, the book focuses on a strengths-based, relational and community-focused approach to long-term change in offending and drug-using populations, as well as the shared barriers to effective reintegration for both. This book will be highly informative for a wide audience, from academics and students interested in studying desistance and recovery to those working in addiction services and the criminal justice system as well as policy makers and the people undertaking their own journeys to desistance and recovery.

Substance abuse and mental health problems constitute a significant proportion of the concerns of the criminal justice system. In answer to the rise of these issues, the justice system increasingly uses court orders to force individuals into treatment programs. In this volume, the contributors examine rehabilitation as it works under these court orders, analyzing the efficacy of the judicial approach. Exploring key features of service delivery, partnership arrangements, and the professional and ethical dilemmas that arise, they highlight perspectives from service users themselves, providing rare and valuable insight for criminal justice research.

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Health Science, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: Drug addiction refers to a dependence on a medication or illegal substance. Addicted people are unable to control the usage of drugs and continue using the substance despite the obvious harms associated with their behavior. Normally, drug addiction causes an intense craving for the substance making it hard for addicted people quit such behaviors. The treatment option for drug addiction within medical establishments depends on various factors such the type of the drug and how its affects the user. Treatment in many medical establishments combines psychotherapy services, inpatient and outpatient programs, self-help groups and sponsors. The treatment options aim at reducing dependency and restore normal lives of addicts. Specifically, heroin addiction is caused by both social and psychological factors. For instance, unpleasant feelings, stress and pressure can contribute to heroin addiction. According to National Institute of Drug Abuse, factors such as cultural beliefs, drug availability and lack of education deficit can also contribute to heroin addiction. In the current world, heroin addiction is treated using various drugs namely; methadone, clonidine, buprenorphine and naltrexone. This paper explores the heroin treatment methods, problems faced, the most effective method and the way to improve the successful rate of rehabilitation.
