Temat okupacji, rozumianej jako narzucony system terroru, gwałtownie zmieniający dane społeczeństwo i dotykający każdego obywatela, nie jest ani przedmiotem gruntownych badań historycznych, ani głównym elementem pamięci kulturowej. The collection of essays in Secret Agents and the Memory of Everyday Collaboration in Communist Eastern Europe addresses institutions that develop the concept of collaboration, and examines the function, social representation and history of secret police archives and institutes of national memory that create these histories of collaboration. The essays provide a comparative account of collaboration/participation across differing categories of collaborators and different social milieux throughout East-Central Europe. They also demonstrate how secret police files can be used to produce more subtle social and cultural histories of the socialist dictatorships. By interrogating the ways in which post-socialist cultures produce the idea of, and knowledge about, “collaborators,” the contributing authors provide a nuanced historical conception of “collaboration,” expanding the concept toward broader frameworks of cooperation and political participation to facilitate a better understanding of Eastern European communist regimes.

The volume focuses on the years following the First World War (1918–1923), when political, military, cultural, social and economic developments consolidated to a high degree in Eastern Europe. This period was shaped, on the one hand, by the efforts to establish an international structure for peace and to set previously oppressed nations on the road to emancipation. On the other hand, it was also defined by political revisionism and territorial claims, as well as a level of political violence that was effectively a continuation of the war in many places, albeit under modified conditions. Political decision-makers sought to protect the emerging nation states from radical political utopias but simultaneously had to rise to the challenges of a social and economic crisis, manage the reconstruction of the many extensively devastated landscapes and provide for the social care and support of victims of war.

Die sich in den Globalisierungszeiten vollziehende Re-Definition des Begriffs Heimat regt zu einer Reflexion des Verständnisses in literarischen Texten an, insbesondere im Werk jener Autoren, die sich stark mit einer Region identifizieren, über den Verlust ihrer Heimat trauern sowie sich als Flüchtlinge, Vertriebene oder Migranten in eine neue einzuleben versuchen. Auch der aus Schlesien stammenden Schriftstellerin Ruth Storm (1905–1993) wurde das Schicksal einer Vertriebenen und Fremden zuteil, das sie schreibend zu bewältigen versuchte. Die narrative Gestaltung der erinnerten und erlebten Heimatbilder spiegelt dabei einerseits ihren rekonstruierenden, wirklichkeitsgetreuen Charakter wider, andererseits kennzeichnet sie eine teleologische Suche nach einer universellen, offenen und immerwährenden Heimat, die besonders das weibliche Subjekt in seiner Eigenständigkeit bekräftigt. Renata Dampc-Jarosz' Analysen und Interpretationen ausgewählter Prosawerke Storms sind in moderne Erinnerungs-, Raum- und Narrativitätsdiskurse eingebunden und werfen damit ein neues Licht auf das Motiv der verlorenen Heimat. The redefinition of the concept of home that is taking place in the age of globalisation stimulates a deeper reflection on its understanding and function in literary texts, reviving the centuries-old discourse, especially in the work of those authors who identify strongly with a region, mourn the loss of their homeland and try to settle in a new one as refugees, displaced persons or migrants. Ruth Storm (1905–1993), a writer from Silesia, also suffered the fate of a displaced person and foreigner, which she tried to overcome in her writing. The narrative form of the remembered and experienced images of homeland reflects on the one hand their reconstructive, realistic character, and on the other hand they characterise a teleological search for a universal, open and everlasting homeland that affirms the subject, especially the female subject, in its autonomy. The analyses and interpretations of selected prose works by Storm are integrated into modern discourses of memory, space and narrativity, which make it possible to shed new light on lost homeland.

The book analyses issues associated with the contemporary and memory in the Polish-German borderlands – a complex, multidimensional cultural and geographic area. The first section of the book, which focuses on contemporary issues, is divided into three parts: namely, a theoretical body, records of conversations with the inhabitants of the borderlands who are engaged in social activities, and records of workshops and conversations that brought together teenage inhabitants of the borderlands. Close cooperation with the inhabitants of two borderland towns resulted in several interesting perspectives on the borderlands, which are seen as a physical space, as well as a mental, intimate, close, and sometimes frustrating space subject to micro- and macro-scale transformations. In this book, the borderlands are viewed from these two perspectives. The micro-scale, is marked out by the individual experience of the inhabitants of the borderlands, and the macro-scale by the institutional framework established for the purpose of constructing an integrated community on the border.
