Comment s'est constitué le catholicisme moderne ? En étudiant les missions qui ont parcouru les campagnes européennes du XVe au XIXe siècle, Louis Châtellier apporte des éléments de réponse à cette question. Après avoir analysé le phénomène missionnaire qui devait diffuser les principes du Concile de Trente, et souligné son amplitude en Europe, principalement aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, il montre comment les récits des jésuites et autres Bons Pères révèlent des croyances, des comportements, des traditions de piété et de vieilles hantises qui forment une première approche d'une ethnologie religieuse européenne. Si les missionnaires prirent en compte ce qu'ils observaient sur place pour adapter leur enseignement aux besoins spirituels et à la sensibilité religieuse des populations, celles-ci, de leur côté, ne restèrent pas passives. Elles infléchirent la religion non seulement en ce qui concerne les dévotions, les rapports entre l'homme et Dieu (sacrements) mais aussi parfois dans son contenu théologique (notion de Dieu, problème du salut). Ainsi s'est constituée "la religion des pauvres" dont est issue, en grande partie, le catholicisme contemporain. L'auteur a eu accès à des sources de première main en Allemagne, en Espagne, en Italie, en France, en Irlande et même en Pologne. Il a pu ainsi suivre sur une vaste échelle comment le message de la Contre-Réforme avait affronté les traditions médiévales persistantes, rencontré le Mal omni-présent (sorcellerie, danse, carnaval) et avait dû composer avec les religions populaires. On observera avec intérêt que l'Eglise rencontre le même problème aujourd'hui avec le Tiers-Monde, où se situe désormais la majorité du peuple catholique. C'est dire tout l'intérêt de cette riche étude, passionnante contribution à l'histoire culturelle de l'Europe moderne.
