L'élection n'a pas toujours été tenue pour le moyen le équitable, le plus efficace et le plus transparent de distribuer les charges et les honneurs publics et de désigner ceux qui devaient contribuer à la fabrication de la loi. Le vote individuel et en conscience, dont la confidentialité et la fiabilité sont garanties par des dispositifs et des objets concrets (les bulletins secrets, les urnes, les isoloirs), n'a souvent pas été davantage considéré comme la meilleure façon de prendre une décision en commun sur les affaires importantes telles que les impôts, la religion ou la science. Longtemps, d'autres systèmes ont joui d'un prestige égal sinon supérieur, qu'il s'agisse du tirage au sort, de l'hérédité, de la cooptation, de l'acclamation ou de l'appel à l'Esprit saint. Votes et élections existaient pourtant, dans d'innombrables lieux et institutions : les villes et les villages, les ordres religieux et les conclaves - où agissait justement l'Esprit saint -, les universités et les académies. Mais ils servaient d'autres fins que la recherche de la solution optimale, la sélection des meilleurs représentants et la juste répartition des charges : la reproduction sociale des élites, par exemple, la construction de la hiérarchie des rangs et des statuts, la protection de certains monopoles professionnels ou encore la défense de l'orthodoxie religieuse... Ils n'avaient finalement pas grand-chose à voir avec l'idée que nous nous faisons de la démocratie et de la place que les procédures électives doivent y tenir. C'est à reconstruire cette longue histoire du vote avant les révolutions du XVIIIe siècle et la naissance des systèmes représentatifs modernes que s'attache ce livre. En rejetant, à partir d'études de cas vivantes et précises, l'idée d'un progrès linéaire du choix rationnel et des institutions représentatives depuis la fin du Moyen Age jusqu'aux révolutions démocratiques, Olivier Christin porte au jour les enjeux des débats qui ont actuellement pour objet la critique de la décision majoritaire et de la démocratie représentative.
