The second half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the following century witnessed a great expansion in world trade and demands by shipping companies for secure deep-water berthage in the major ports that could no longer be ignored. Drawing from the Dublin Port Archive, Dr Ronald Cox explores the lives and great contributions of two of Dublin Port's Chief Engineers, Bindon Blood Stoney and John Purser Griffith, who made Dublin Port the national asset that it is today. Documenting their roles at the forefront of Irish Engineering, Cox reflects on their impact on the construction and history of the port itself; From the revolutionary Diving Bell that allowed the construction of the bridges and quay walls to the reconstruction of the north and south quays and modern dredging operations. As Chief Port Engineer, Bindon Blood Stoney paved the way for the acceleration of engineering work, leading to the creation of a modern deep-water port to serve an expanding economy. He was heavily involved in directing all the engineering work in the port, including the rebuilding of two of the major bridges spanning the river Liffey. John Purser Griffith served as assistant engineer to Bindon Blood Stoney at Dublin Port, before taking over as Engineer-in-Chief in 1898. During his time at the port, Purser Griffith was responsible for the introduction of an extensive system of dredging and land reclamation, and the electrification of the port. During the course of a long career in the port and as an independent consulting engineer, he made a major contribution to the engineering profession and to the development of the Irish nation.

This book describes the social and economic conditions in Ireland in the second half of the 19th century, that is after the Great Famine. Though the famine severely affected the under-developed parts of Ireland, it did not greatly affect the Irish economy as a whole . On the contrary, an ever-increasing output was now spread over a falling population. GDP per capita went on rising, and people had more money to spread. The Government, the economy, agricultural and industrial, the churches, the educational system, medicine, the arts, the music, and the sports are described.

Documenting Maritime Heritage At Risk written by Elizabeth Shotton and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-05 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk addresses the risks posed to coastal piers and quays due to climate change, the urgent need for documentation and attendant questions regarding long-term conservation, and the role communities could have in this endeavour. Case studies from communities, researchers, and national agencies offer insights into the documentation and analysis of coastal heritage, guidance on survey methodologies, and the potential of digital tools. Communities living along the coast, who are deeply attached to their heritage, are facing these threats very directly – and often with a sense of having little agency in the discussions or decisions being taken. Yet, as the book demonstrates, they could have a central role to play as first-hand observers of the impact of climate change on their heritage. The collection offers an overview of the invaluable role of different participants, working collectively in the documentation and management of endangered maritime heritage. Documenting Maritime Heritage at Risk provides a vital resource for researchers and students engaged in the study of maritime heritage. It will also be of great interest to practitioners, such as local heritage or conservation officers and marine engineers who bear the primary responsibility for recording and maintaining maritime heritage.

Transporter Bridges written by John Hannavy and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-28 with Photography categories.

This volume of original and historic photographs captures the story of the ingenious bridges that carried us from the Victorian era into modern times. With their moveable platforms designed to traverse busy waterways, Transporter Bridges served a brief but vital need from the late 19th century into the early 20th. Though many were planned, the huge increase in road transport quickly rendered them obsolete. In the end, fewer than thirty were ever completed across the world, with only nine still standing in their original form. But the transporter bridge appears to be entering a renaissance. In France and Argentina, restoration efforts are bringing life back to some of the original bridges. Meanwhile, proposals exist for three new bridges across France—at Nantes, Marseille and Brest—to replace some of those lost during and after the Second World War. This illustrated history captures the beauty of transporter bridges through hundreds of color photographs. The author combines his own modern images with many historic photographs and postcards chronicling the construction and operation of these unusual structures.

O'Connell Street is at the heart of Dublin. It has been through name changes and revolutions, destruction and rebuilding and remained at the heart of the story of Ireland for centuries. Nicola Pierce explores the people, the history, the buildings and the stories behind the main street in our capital city. Packed with stories of the people connected to the streets, from the subjects of the statues, to the sculptors that created them, from those who owned and developed the street since the days of St Mary's Abbey in 1147, to those who worked and lived there through the centuries and all the drama and scandals that went on both on the street and behind closed doors. O'Connell Street will also feature more personal, anecdotal stories of the cinemas, meeting under Clery's clock, buying engagement rings at The Happy Ring House, witnessing motorcades such as the Apollo XIII coming down the street, the heyday of film stars staying at the Gresham, and scandals and murders on the street.
