Cammina per una Praga spopolata, Kafka. Ristagna in lui l’amarezza per un fidanzamento fallito e per una carriera insoddisfacente, ma sopravvive la speranza di tempi migliori – a Berlino o altrove –, dedicati a tempo pieno alla letteratura. Tuttavia, nell’agosto del 1917, si sveglia nel pieno della notte sputando sangue. È tubercolosi, una condanna a morte. Quelli qui raccontati, dal 1915 al 1924, sono dunque anni di sofferenza – le continue cure in sanatorio, le ristrettezze economiche, l’ombra dei futuri orrori del nazismo – e di consapevolezza: della fine che incombe, ma anche della propria identità e caratura di scrittore. Anni in cui c'è spazio anche per un nuovo amore, più maturo ma anche velato di tristezza, con lo spettro della fine sempre sullo sfondo; e che trova la sua conclusione il 3 giugno 1924, il giorno in cui Kafka muore. Anche in quest’ultimo volume della sua biografia, Reiner Stach, ricorrendo a materiali in gran parte inediti, ci conduce nei meandri dell’universo kafkiano. Un racconto che segue i passi dell’ultima fase della vita di Kafka con precisione millimetrica, quasi scientifica, ma in cui è inevitabile finire risucchiati dalle emozioni; fino a identificarci con lui, mentre osserviamo, come fosse davanti a noi, l'Europa cadere a pezzi.

Fascism and the Second World War left Italy indelibly changed, and cinema was arguably the art that most rigorously confronted the devastated nation. In this examination of four Italian filmmakers, Noa Steimatsky brilliantly maps their forceful negotiation of Italy’s identity and posits that the cinematic forms they employ constitute an imaginary reinhabiting of Italy-one that is inextricably linked with the political, physical, and symbolic predicament of reconstruction. A dynamic intersection of pictorial and photographic, architectural and literary discourses inform Steimatsky’s revisionist interrogation of exemplary works from the 1940s to the mid–1960s. The Women’s Movement is usually referred to as if it were a constant, global phenomenon. There are women’s movements in Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, India, Japan and Australia, and many women and men assume that they are regional manifestations of the same thing, and share a common core. Susan Bassnett has lived and been involved in the struggles of the women’s movement in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom, and has had extensive contacts with feminists in the German Democratic Republic. On the basis of her personal experiences and study of women’s history and literature in these countries she is able to present a striking picture of the variety of feminist aims, tactics and priorities in the four countries, and of the character of the women’s movement in four very different cultures. In Italy, she focuses on the violence of the women’s movement – its intellectualism and energy. In analysing the American women’s movement she dwells on its roots in the past, and its faith in pragmatic solutions. The GDR presents completely different questions, hinging on the relationship between state socialism and feminism. In the UK, Susan Bassnett finds herself returning to that all-pervasive aspect of British life – class, and its importance for feminists.
