Pope Francis has call La CiviltA Cattolica "one of a kind." As a magazine of general reference, articles in La CiviltA Cattolica are written and edited in a way that has the educated though non-specialist reader in mind. Discussions in the periodical are rigorous and well researched but always aim to be open and accessible. La CiviltA Cattolica in English is published monthly - 12 editions and 1440 pages of articles annually. Its articles, commentaries and reflections focus on theological, philosophical, moral, historical, political, social and literary topics. The content is divided in sections for documents, profiles and interviews, the life of the Church and commentaries. The content provides reading for an informed Catholic conscience that is better able to decide freely. Today, as it has since its foundation, La CiviltA Cattolica aims to read and interpret the history, politics, culture, science and art in the light of the Christian faith. One of the oldest, continuously published Catholic journals, La CiviltA Cattolica has always aimed to provide deeper assessments of topics and events of broad significance. It is "high popular" in tone and reach but not specialist in character. While its treatment of topics will often run over 5,000 words, the periodical is for the educated and searching reader rather than being a professional journal. All authors are Jesuits and all articles have been viewed and approved by an official of the Vatican's Secretariat of State before publication. For this reason, La CiviltA Cattolica has always been a widow into what thoughts, policies and priorities are alive in the Apostolic See.

A collection of 09 articles from the October 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. Signing the historic Document on Human Fraternity in 2019, Pope Francis and Aḥmad al-Tayyeb declared that the only alternative to destructive geopolitics is fraternity. On October 3rd, 2020 the pope signed the encyclical Fratelli Tutti (Brothers and Sisters All). Antonio Spadaro decodes the pope’s third encyclical – that was inspired by the 2019 Document. David Neuhaus, SJ says the Catholic Church has always proceeded cautiously while dealing with the political reality that is the State of Israel. Even though Jews and Catholics share a common set of concepts derived from Scripture, they do not share a common theological understanding of these concepts. In Ritual or Ritualism: The spirit of Confucianism, Benoit Vermander, SJ tries to assimilate what Confucius and his disciples found in the observance of ritualism. The same ritual event can have different meanings. He asks whether these themes are completely outdated today or not. Media ecology approaches communication as an ecosystem. From the mid-19th century, the Catholic Church faced a slow revolution in the communication ecosystem. By 2020, the incursion of the pandemic forced the Church to fully engage with digital media, especially in celebrating the liturgy. Paul A. Soukup, SJ explains the different models of the Church as an ecosystem. In Hagia Sophia: From museum to mosque, Giancarlo Pani SJ elaborates the historical importance of Hagia Sophia as a unique ecumenical space: from basilica to mosque and finally a museum, and now a mosque again.

A collection of 10 articles from the December 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. In Italian Jesuit schools Dante was not a popular, nor recommended author. The article ‘Dante and the Jesuits’ by Giandomenico Mucci, SJ tries to explain the reason behind the popular misconception about the Jesuit’s attitude toward Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. For centuries, theologians, philosophers, cosmologists and scientists have been asking this question: Why do the laws of nature seem to have been fine tuned so accurately that they allow the development of living beings? Paolo Beltrame, SJ discusses the concept in cosmology called the fine tuning problem. The article The Power of Forgiveness reviews the book Apeirogon. Irish author, Colum McCann, approaches the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from an original perspective and looks at the conflict in depth. But the book does not claim to offer solutions or explanations. The White-Red Revolution in Belarus, began immediately after the announcement of the result of the polls, in August 2020, revealing a deep discontent and a desire for political transformation, a new government, which can neither be underestimated nor ignored. Giovanni Sale examines the issue more closely and within its historical framework in the article The White-Red Revolution of Belarus. Antonio Spadaro illustrates the importance of the ancient and wild environment of Sardinia and its nuraghes. He says the nuraghe’s nomination to be recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site is an opportune occasion to dedicate time to study and research the development of sacred itineraries on Sardinian soil. The Emotions and Affections of Jesus opens a window onto the interiority of Jesus through accounts in the Synoptic Gospels. They show him capable of rejoicing and crying, of being moved and angry, of being indignant and loving, “meek and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29).

L’Église, des femmes avec des homes by Anne-Marie Pelletier reflects on the relationship between women and men in the Church. Federico Lombardi’s review highlights the distance and misunderstandings created between the Church and women and urge us to overcome this divide. Giovanni Sale retraces the course of the Libyan civil war and diplomatic efforts in 2019 in order to clearly understand the strengths and weaknesses of the joint declaration produced in the Berlin Conference on Libya which was held on January 19, 2020. Gabriele Gionti, SJ traces the development of cosmology from the Old Testament to the present day. In The Beginning of the Universe and the Question of God, he discusses the gradual movement from a vision in which God was part of the cosmological system to a vision in which God is no longer part of the cosmological model. Coronavirus Policy: Activating the antibodies of Catholicism, is Antonio Spadaro’s response to the anxiety we live with, advising us to activate ‘antibodies’ against the ‘virus of fear’ in our social and political life! Laurent Basanese discusses the impacts of the Fraternity Document signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar. Despite the inevitable criticism, it is generally perceived as a very important event in the history of dialogue between peoples and cultures. The Bible depicts cities as symbolic representations of three different ideas that correspond substantially to the development of the whole history of salvation. Pino Stancari, SJ gives insights to these cities in Three Biblical Cities.

An eBook offering a portrait of the Franciscan pontificate. This eBook from La Civilta Cattolica consists of 14 narrative essays, summarizing the key features of Francis’ papacy. In this volume we gather some articles that have appeared in the English edition of La Civiltà Cattolica. They offer a portrait of the pontificate. Obviously, these pages are not exhaustive – nor do they intend to be so – but they certainly do touch on some of the key points for understanding the figure and work of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The first two chapters go to the roots of his formation. Ten years after the event, the first chapter takes us back to the Fifth General Conference of the Episcopate of Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAM), which took place in the Brazilian city of Aparecida, May 11-31, 2007. The pastoral experience of Bergoglio and his inspiration have deep roots in that Conference. The second text reconstructs the figure of Fr. Miguel Ángel Fiorito (1916-2005) who was a central figure in the formation of Bergoglio. Then some specific themes are addressed: the international politics of the pontificate, his own style of leadership, a closer look at the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia and the themes of the encyclical Laudato Si’. Finally, the volume closes with a reflection on being a pastor, its specific characteristics, and also how to recognise a “bad pastor.”

A collection of 10 articles from the January 2021 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. 2021 is a year of great expectations of big pharma and politicians delivering on speedy vaccination and promises of their efficacy. As well, politicians are also expected to lead us out of economic recession. One of the first leaders to offer us a vision for a new economic future is Pope Francis. In The Economy of Francesco and Young People Gaël Giraud discusses the pope’s call to young economists to meet and reflect on how to create “an economy that gives life and does not kill, includes and does not exclude, humanizes and does not dehumanize, takes care of creation and does not plunder it.” Cho Hyun-Chul’s Economics of Covid-19 explains how a move towards localized economies and a reasonable level of self-sufficiency is possible in light of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’ Juan Carlos Scannone and the Theology of the Peopleby Paul Gilbert offers an analysis of Scannone’s philosophy and theology and a definition of ‘the people’ And 55 years after Dignitatis Humanae Felix Körner writes about Religious Freedom: Facing New Challenges.
