Historical Dictionary Of Colonial America written by William Pencak and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-15 with History categories.

The years between 1450 and 1550 marked the end of one era in world history and the beginning of another. Most importantly, the focus of global commerce and power shifted from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, largely because of the discovery ofthe New World. The New World was more than a geographic novelty. It opened the way for new human possibilities, possibilities that were first fulfilled by the British colonies of North America, nearly 100 years after Columbus landed in the Bahamas. TheHistorical Dictionary of Colonial America covers America's history from the first settlements to the end and immediate aftermath of the French and Indian War. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, an extensive bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on the various colonies, which were founded and how they became those which declared independence. Religious, political, economic, and family life; important people; warfare; and relations between British, French, Spanish, and Dutch colonies are also among the topics covered. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Colonial America.

Dividing The Land written by Edward T. Price and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-04-15 with Business & Economics categories.

Many property lines drawn in early America still survive today and continue to shape the landscape and character of the United States. Surprisingly, though, no one until now has thoroughly examined the process by which land was divided into private property and distributed to settlers from the beginning of colonization to early nationhood. In this unprecedented study, Edward T. Price covers most areas of the United States in which the initial division of land was controlled by colonial governments—the original thirteen colonies, and Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. By examining different land policies and the irregular pattern of property that resulted from them, Price chronicles the many ways colonies managed land to promote settlement, develop agriculture, defend frontiers, and attract investment. His analysis reveals as much about land planning techiniques carried to America from Europe as innovations spurred by the unique circumstances of the new world. Price’s analysis draws on his thorough survey of property records from the first land plans in Virginia in 1607 to empresario grants in Texas in the 1820s. This breadth of data allows him to identify regional differences in allocating land, assess the impact of land planning by historical figures like William Penn of Pennsylvania and Lord Baltimore of Maryland, and trace changes in patterns of land division and ownership through transfers of power among Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas.

Jacob My Friend is an unusual name, but this very real person was a most unusual character. Arriving in the New World from Holland before 1650, he became a fur trader with the Susquehannock Indians. He married one of them and had several children. Soon he was a trusted interpreter for the Susquehannocks in their difficult dealings with the Dutch and English. Many of Jacobs exciting and often dangerous activities involving the Indians are recorded in contemporary accounts. Clearly he experienced the ordinary, but often strange events of their daily lives. He was also witness to the disastrous clash between the Indians and Europeans. Through his unique journal, Jacob helps us to see the forgotten history and very different culture of the Susquehannocks.
