Alexandre Dumas, fils (1824-1895) was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas, pere, who followed in his father's footsteps becoming a celebrated writer, author and playwright. In 1831 his father legally recognized him and ensured the young Dumas received the best education possible at the Institution Goubaux and the College Bourbon. At that time, the law allowed the elder Dumas to take the child away from his mother. Her agony inspired Dumas fils to write about tragic female characters. In almost all of his writings, he emphasized the moral purpose of literature and in his 1858 play, Le fils Naturel (The Illegitimate Son), he espoused the belief that if a man fathers an illegitimate child, then he has an obligation to legitimize the child and marry the woman. In 1844 Dumas, fils moved to Saint-Germain-en-Laye. There, he met Marie Duplessis, a young courtesan who would be the inspiration for his romantic novel, Camille (La Dame aux Camillas). His other works include: Atala (1848), Diane de Lys (1853), L'Affaire Clemenceau (1867), La Princesse Georges (1871) and L'Etrangere (1876).

In an exciting and productive life, Alexandre Dumas produced a number of novels, plays and poetry, celebrated in France and Europe, some of which were made into films, teledramas, radio plays, etc. Here, for the first time in English is a translation of one of Dumas' forgotten gems, a novella, first published in a French journal in 1885. Set in Dumas' birthplace, Villiers-Cotterets, and amongst the Parisian bourgeoisie of the mid-19th century, it tells the story of romance - the marriage of the merchant bourgeois, prosy and pompous Monsieur Peluche, manufacturer and dealer of artificial fruit and flowers, and his easy going, sporting friend in the country, Madeleine. The former is the father of a beautiful, rosy, innocent daughter, Camille, the latter the father-figure for his dead best friend's son, Henri. Written with a keen sense of irony, satire, and twists in plotting, the novel reveals Dumas' keen eye for romance and also exhibits his interest in matters of race.

This vintage book contains the fourth volume of Alexandre Dumas’s famous adventure novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”. Set in early nineteenth century France during the time of the Bourbon Restoration, it tells the story of a man’s wrongful imprisonment, his escape, and his indefatigable quest for revenge. A masterful tale of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness, ”The Count of Monte Cristo” is rightfully one the most famous novels of all time, and deserves a place on every bookshelf. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "Chicot the Jester". Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
