More than two decades after the Northern Ireland peace agreement, conflict still flares between deprived Protestant/Unionist/ Loyalist and Catholic/Nationalist/Republican working-class interface communities, who remain divided by numerous 'peace walls'. In light of Brexit, the Irish border issue and the power-sharing impasse progress in local peacebuilding has stalled. This might even jeopardise the overall peace process. Within this context, this book explores, largely empirically, the nature and causes of conflict at the interface. An attempt is also made to provide an outlook on peace in Northern Ireland and to highlight potential lessons for other conflict-ridden, divided societies.

Bangsawan - the first popular urban commercial theatre in Malaysia - merged in the late nineteenth century as an adaptation of the Parsi theatre of India which toured Malaya. The first indigenous theatre in Malaya to be modelled along Western lines, bangsawan engendered the development of the first Malay orchestra and the first Malay popular music in the country. This book traces the stylistic changes in bangsawan from the late nineteenth century to the 1980s and links these changes to the socio-political transformations in Malaysian society. A product of a period characterized by rapid and radical social changes occurring as a result of British intervention, bangsawan of the early twentieth century was heterogeneous, innovative, and constantly adapting to new situations and new audiences. Its conventions of plot structure, character types, costumes, speech, and stage setting corresponded with the new 'structure of feeling' in the society of that time. After a decline in the 1940s and 1950s caused by social hardships and uncertainties in the wake of World War II and the immediate post-war and Emergency periods, bangsawan was revived in the 1970s. However, this revival - spearheaded by the government and government institutions - has resulted in bangsawan being reshaped, Malayized for new national purposes, and projected as traditional theatre. This book is written in terms of a relatively recent trend in ethnomusicology which emphasizes diachronic analyses. The author is an ethnomusicologist at the Arts Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Weniger Beachtung haben dabei jene Lander gefunden, die sich schein bar bereits auf den Weg einer erfolgreichen Offnung ihrer politischen Systeme begeben hatten, dann aber eine autoritiire Regression erlebten. In anderen Staaten wiederum schien die Demokratie bereits am Horizont aufzu leuchten, doch blieb sie bisher noch ein unerreichtes Ziel. Urn sich deshalb einmal mit den "blockierten Demokratien" eingehender zu beschiiftigen, ha ben wir im Februar 1995 zu einer Fachtagung an die Forschungsstatte der Evangelischen Studiengemeinschaft (FEST) in Heidelberg eingeladen, an der vor aHem jiingere Regionalexperten teilnahmen. Ziel war die Er6rtertung der Entstehungsfaktoren flir blockierte Demokratisierung und der Aussichten auf eine Uberwindung solcher Blockaden. Dabei war es uns ein Anliegen, die Referenten auf die Anwendung eines bestimmten methodischen Analysekon zepts zu verpflichten, niimlich auf das von den Herausgebern entwickelte Konzept der strategischen und konfliktfahigen Gruppen (SKOG). Dieser An satz bemiiht sich urn eine Synthese von System- und Akteursebene bei der Untersuchung von Prozessen politischen Wandels und fokussiert die Hand lungsdialektik der oppositioneHen Gruppen in ihrem Kampf urn demokrati sche Reformen.
