Ufe time prediction, durability and reliability analysis of structural components for industrial application, have been important problems for a long time, whatever materials used. Fatigue behaviour, fracture mechanics analysis, limit behaviour and strength criteria, as well as damage analysis, were developed in order to obtain material related elements to be used in structural component design. Classical materials such as metals are generally isotropic and a large amount of data are available for those materials since many decades. The analysis of many important failures of structural components brought attention to the influence of the environmental conditions, such as temperature, moisture, corrosive liquids and radiations, on the mechanical characteristics. In the last decades an important number of structural applications, especially in the aerospace industry, needed lightweight components and pushed the used materials and design concepts to higher levels of performances. The introduction of composites was an interesting answer to these goals, but they brought an important amount of new problems that has to be solved for safe structural applications under combined mechanical and environmental loading histories. Composites for structural applications can be built up with short or long continuous fibres or even textiles. They can be quasi-isotropic or anisotropic and the mismatch of fibre and matrix properties need a careful understanding of the interface interphase properties.

Advanced, high-performance composite materials are really material systems. The constituent materials interact in such a way that their collective response is more than the linear sum of the response of the constituents. This simple reality provides the technical community with a remarkable opportunity to create composite material systems which are uniquely suited to perform specific engineering tasks. At the same time, this systems aspect of composite materials is a very great challenge to the research community. In introduces complexity, nonlinearity, and scaling problems (to name a few) which require the development of new representations of material behavior, from the standpoint of mechanics, chemistry, and physics.

Durability analysis can be defined as the prediction methodology of safe residual behaviour after a given life time under a complex mechanical loading history in combination with a program of environmental variations. This was, and is a central problem for the reliability of structural components whatever are the basic material systems. With composite systems, combination of different materials in interaction, an integrated material structure design becomes possible. If one of the phases is a polymer, the composite system has time dependent properties and as consequence durability analysis has to be performed taking into account the internal time factor in combination with strong influences from temperature changes and moisture diffusion. Insurance companies need information on durability and reliability in order to cover the risks, and in the event of failure lawyers have to arrive at an agreement om the responsibilites of the different actors involved in the constructiion. This book is an overview of the state of the different aspects of safe structural integrity for a given lifetime of composite structures, with special emphasis on polymer matrix composites. It is of interest for scientists and engineers involved in composites and for designers of composite structural components.

Given the increasing use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structural civil engineering, there is a vital need for critical information related to the overall durability and performance of these new materials under harsh and changing conditions. Durability of composites for civil and structural applications provides a thorough overview of key aspects of the durability of FRP composites for designers and practising engineers.Part one discusses general aspects of composite durability. Chapters examine mechanisms of degradation such as moisture, aqueous solutions, UV radiation, temperature, fatigue and wear. Part two then discusses ways of using FRP composites, including strengthening and rehabilitating existing structures with FRP composites, and monitoring techniques such as structural health monitoring.Durability of composites for civil and structural applications provides practising engineers, decision makers and students with a useful and fundamental guide to the use of FRP composites within civil and structural engineering. - Provides a thorough overview of key aspects of the durability of composites - Examines mechanisms of degradation such as aqueous solutions, moisture, fatigue and wear - Discusses ways of using FRP composites, including strengthening and rehabilitating existing structures

Reinforced Plastics Durability written by Geoffrey Pritchard and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01-14 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Reinforced plastics are becoming widely adopted for long-term structural use-in everything from buildings and bridges to boats and swimming pools. However, the lifetimes being sought are far greater than the whole history of reinforced plastics production! Reinforced Plastics Durability explores the strength and weathering characteristics which make the material ideal for numerous applications, but also alerting the user of wear and corrosion-with studies of the processes and mechanisms which cause the deterioration. Written especially for first-time users of reinforced plastics-engineers, designers, and managers alike-Reinforced Plastics Durability offers substantial introductory information with key concepts. Subsequent chapters examine the long-term threats to the integrity of reinforced plastics: outdoor weathering, solvent/water attack, high temperatures, and repetitive stress. To maximize durability, contributors to the book report on experience with specific applications over time; the possibility of repair; and use of computer techniques to predict durability. Despite mentioning many possible threats to durability, Reinforced Plastics Durability emphasizes the fact that reinforced plastics composites have performed very well in most of the application areas. Readers will be able to take advantage of that success-and to possibly take steps toward the next phase of refinements and improvements.

Durability of Composite Systems meets the challenge of defining these precepts and requirements, from first principles, to applications in a diverse selection of technical fields selected to form a corpus of concepts and methodologies that define the field of durability in composite material systems as a modern discipline. That discipline includes not only the classical rigor of mechanics, physics and chemistry, but also the critical elements of thermodynamics, data analytics, and statistical uncertainty quantification as well as other requirements of the modern subject. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the field, suited to both reference and instructional use. It will be essential reading for academic and industrial researchers, materials scientists and engineers and all those working in the design, analysis and manufacture of composite material systems. - Makes essential direct and detailed connections to modern concepts and methodologies, such as machine learning, systems controls, sustainable and resilient systems, and additive manufacturing - Provides a careful balance between theory and practice so that presentations of details of methodology and philosophy are always driven by a context of applications and examples - Condenses selected information regarding the durability of composite materials in a wide spectrum of applications in the automotive, wind energy, civil engineering, medical devices, electrical systems, aerospace and nuclear fields

Most of the new composite systems, based on polymers (materials, structures and adhesive joints) exhibit time effects and their behaviour is strongly influenced by temperature moisture absorption and other environmental factors. The use of these materials for structural applications, mechanical loads, (of static, dynamical amd impact type), in a surrounding with varying environmental conditions, needs design procedures, which take into account this general loading history interacting with the thermomechanical characteristics, in order to obtain a reliable prediction of the long term behaviour. A valid methodology for life time prediction and/or durability analysis is probably the key element for a larger development of the use of polymer based composite systems in structures in the future. Fluid Effects in Polymers and Polymeric Composites, written by the late Dr. Y. Jack Weitsman, addresses the wide range of parameters that affect the interaction of fluids with polymers and polymeric composites. The book aims at broadening the scope of available data, mostly limited up to this time to weight-gain recordings of fluid ingress into polymers and composites, to the practical circumstances of fluctuating exposure. Various forms of experimental data are given, in conjunction with theoretical models derived from basic scientific principles, and correlated with severity of exposure conditions and interpreted by means of rationally based theoretical models. The practical implications of the effects of fluids are discussed. The issue of fluid effects on polymers and polymeric composites is of concern to engineers and scientists active in aerospace and naval structures, as an increasing portion of these structures are made of polymeric composites and employ polymeric adhesives as a joining device. While the book is intended for this audience, it will also interest researchers and graduate students interested in the mechanics and materials aspects of this matter.
