El protagonista y escritor del diario es Martín Santomé, un oficinista montevideano. “La Tregua” nos da sólo una mirada en una etapa de la vida de Santomé, podemos seguir su vida sólo dentro de un año, pero en las entradas del diario Santomé da retrospectivas al pasado, así que el lector sabe lo que pasó antes del comienzo del diario. El título “La Tregua” se refiere al tiempo corto que el protagonista Santomé tiene con su novia Laura Avellaneda. Es sólo un corto periodo de tiempo, una corta dicha que termina demasiado pronto. Al final la situación del protagonista es casi la misma que antes de la tregua, sólo ha experimentado un periodo de felicidad que al final echa en falta. “La Tregua” fue la novela más difundida y conocida de Mario Benedetti y le trajo el mayor éxito público de su carrera. Fue publicada en el año 1960 y ha alcanzado ya 148 ediciones. Por su gran éxito en América Latina “La Tregua” ha sido traducida a diecinueve idiomas, así que casi todo el mundo podía leerla. Además, se ha llevada al cine, al teatro, a la radio y a la televisión. Una versión cinematográfica de “La Tregua” fue finalista para un Oscar, pero para Benedetti no es su mejor novela y por eso el entusiasmo por “La Tregua” le asombra. Pero desde el punto de vista del público le gusta “La Tregua” porque es una novela de amor que es un tema que le gusta a la mayoría.
