»Der Entschluß, die Mandschurei in ihrem südlichen Teile zu durchqueren, verdankt seine Entstehung einer spontanen Eingebung, die mir erst in Peking zum Bewußtsein kam, als ich nach Abschluß des Präliminarfriedens zu Beginn des Jahres 1901 mich am Ende meiner Tätigkeit als Vertreter der »Vossischen Zeitung« auf dem chinesischen Kriegsschauplatz sah, während meine Unternehmungslust sich noch nicht befriedigt fühlte. Entschluß und Beginn der Ausführung lagen nur wenige Tage auseinander. Unter diesen Umständen konnte natürlich von einer wissenschaftlichen Vorbereitung über diejenigen Kenntnisse hinaus, die ich während meiner ostasiatischen Aufenthalte von den zu bereisenden Gegenden gesammelt hatte, nicht die Rede sein, und ich halte zur richtigen Beurteilung der nachfolgenden Kapitel das Geständnis für notwendig, daß mir die Aufgabe, die mir bei meiner Abreise von Peking vorschwebte, zunächst als eine rein journalistische erschien. ... Ich brauche wohl nicht besonders zu bekräftigen, daß ich mich, sobald die Umstände es erlaubten, auch theoretisch sehr eingehend mit den hier behandelten Fragen beschäftigt habe, und daß die Tagebuchform nur ihrer Form, ihrem Tatsachengerippe und ihren Daten nach meinen auf der Reise geführten Tagebüchern entspricht, während die Ausarbeitung selbst das Werk des letzten Jahres war.« [Der Autor im Vorwort]
