About 16 centuries ago, an unknown Indian author or authors gathered together the diverse threads of already ancient traditions and wove them into a verbal tapestry that today is still the central text for worshippers of the Hindu Devi, the Divine Mother. This spiritual classic, the Devimahatmya, addresses the perennial questions of the nature of the universe, humankind, and divinity. How are they related, how do we live in a world torn between good and evil, and how do we find lasting satisfaction and inner peace? These questions and their answers form the substance of the Devimahatmya. Its narrative of a dispossessed king, a merchant betrayed by the family he loves, and a seer whose teaching leads beyond existential suffering sets the stage for a trilogy of myths concerning the all-powerful Divine Mother, Durga, and the fierce battles she wages against throngs of demonic foes. In these allegories, her adversaries represent our all-too-human impulses toward power, possessions, and pleasure. The battlefields symbolize the field of human consciousness on which our lives' dramas play out in joy and sorrow, in wisdom and folly. The Devimahatmya speaks to us across the ages of the experiences and beliefs of our ancient ancestors. We sense their enchantment at nature's bounty and their terror before its destructive fury, their recognition of the good and evil in the human heart, and their understanding that everything in our experience is the expression of a greater reality, personified as the Divine Mother.

"An initiate of the late Swami Venkatesananda, Durga Rahasya builds on the insights vouchsafed by him. It brings out the cosmological, anthropological and existential meaning of the text via the three tales. The Introduction unravels the stories syntactically together with the lauds in a relaxed semiotic rhythm, supplementing with a commentary cultural and trans-cultural in five brief chapters enabling insights on the Eternal Feminine to the contemporary reader. The transcreation in a class by itself done by a poet steeped in Durga symbology as a sahridaya reader rounds off the Durga Rahasya. The book should interest any intelligent reader in addition to indologists and psychologists and the initiates. It is a handmade book, free from needless jargon."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

By focusing on contemporary popular religious traditions, the book represents a substantial contribution to the study of modern religious practices in Banaras, holy city of India. This book offers in-depth, ethnographic views of many contemporary popular religious practices that have, for the most part, received little attention by scholars. Topics covered include the Ramlila celebrations, devotion to Hanuman, and goddess worship, and the way that Banarsi Boli, the local dialect of Banaras, supports its users in their identification with the sacred city.

Sri M.P. Pandit who is a keen student of the Tantras and Vedas has rendered the work in English in eleven chapters. The readings are free translations, with annotations where necessary, omitting technical details but preserving the spirit and essential import of the original in his characteristically lucid style. Who is fit for the path of Tantra? Who is competent to guide the novice on the double - edged razor path? What is the responsibility of a Guru to a disciple? The birds said- 'O Jaimini! This was the way, sage Markandeya had narrated the divine tales to Kraustuki. A person who either studies this Purana or listens to it achieves great accomplishment. All his desires are fulfilled and he enjoys a long life. He becomes free from all his sins. Markandeya Purana is the seventh among all the eighteen Puranas. Listening to it helps a man to atone for all the sins committed during the period of one hundred crore Kalpas. The virtues attained by listening to Markandeya Purana are equivalent to the virtues attained by making donations at Pushkar or by studying all the Vedas.'Jaimini replied- 'O birds! You have enlightened my mind by narrating the tales of Markandeya Purana and have made it free from all sorts of confusion. May the almighty God bless you, may you enjoy a long life free from all the diseases.'Saying like this, Jaimini went back to his hermitage.

Durga saptashlokee is a collection of seven important slokas from the sacred text Devi Maahaathmyam. The text Devi Maahatmyam praises the glories of mother Durgaa and elaborately narrates the great deeds of mother goddess. The text Durga Saptashlokee is a collection of the most important shlokas (mantras) from Durgaa patha for use in daily prayers and chants. Each of the seven shlokas praise the goddess Durgaa and pray to her for different fruits. All of these verses are found in different chapters of the Devi Maahaatmya. Each of these shlokas is a mantra which can also be chanted separately to please the mother and to attain a particular benefit, pray for protection, wealth, good fortune and the mother's (Ambaa's) grace. This hymn starts with a conversation between lord Shiva and Devi. One who chants this hymn with true devotion for goddess Durgaa shall be blessed with all fortunes of life and will also attain self realization by the grace of the goddess. In this book I will explain the meaning of those seven shlokas according to the commentaries of great shaakta scholars (devotees of mother goddess) like Bhaaskara raaya maakhin, Naagoji bhatta and other scholars of the shakta tradition
