Dutch Moderne examines a little-charted genre of Dutch graphic design during the 20's and 30's. The stylistic movements of the period - from De Stijl to art deco - played a vital role in bringing the concepts of the modern movement into the commercial world. A synthesis of cubist and ancient Egyptian and Mayan forms, art deco quickly spread throughout post-World War I France, Germany, England, Italy, and Eastern Europe before appearing in Holland. And yet despite its comparatively late start, Dutch designers enthusiastically embraced the style for its contemporary feel, elegance, and streamlined aesthetic as an alternative to staid traditional and outrageous revolutionary graphic approaches. The style influenced virtually all forms of Dutch commercial art, from magazines, newspapers, and posters to trademarks and advertisements. Dutch Moderne features over 500 of these designs, many of which have never before been published in the United States, by scores of designers both renowned and anonymous. These unearthed artifacts of Dutch commercial design reveal the rich legacy of an indigenous style. This book is an essential resource for graphic designers, students of design, and pop culture history aficionados alike.

Here is the essential book on De Stijl, one of the longest lived and most influential of modern art movements. H. L. C. Jaffé recounts the history of this abstract movement; explains its artistic goals and practice; delineates its utopian ideology; and describes the special qualities of De Stijl painting, sculpture, architecture, and design. Jaffé charts the evolution of the movement from its beginning in 1917 with the founding of the journal De Stijl. He locates the philosophical origins of the artistic program, which put aside representation of nature and confined itself to "pure" forms of expression: vertical and horizontal lines and the primary colors--yellow, blue, red--against white, black, and gray. He describes the roles of Ban Doesburg, De Stijl's driving force, and Mondrian, its leading exponent; the application of its principles to design and architecture; and the involvement of sculptors Arp and Brancusi. He places De Stijl in relation to other abstract arts and demonstrates its wide range of influence. Throughout Jaffé quotes extensively from the writings of the De Stijl group, allowing the artists themselves to describe their aims and methods; a complete forty-page pamphlet by Mondrian, Art and Life (1931) is appended.

The Netherlands is a relatively small country, but it has a large international impact when it comes to design. This book looks at the decades from 1890 to 1940, when modern Dutch design emerged and crystallized into a number of coherent movements. While designers in the Netherlands during this period were familiar with and influenced by ideas and trends originating outside the country, they created a distinctively Dutch design culture that remains vital in the twenty-first century.Modern Dutch Design includes four essays that examine important, and sometimes overlooked, currents that ran through this half century, as Dutch designers responded to powerful social, economic, and political changes. With more than 250 illustrations, drawn mostly from the collection of The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, it offers compelling visual evidence of the rich diversity of Dutch design in these decades.

Using Pieter de Marees' Description and Historical Account of the Gold Kingdom of Guinea (1602) as her main source material, author Elizabeth Sutton brings to bear approaches from the disciplines of art history and book history to explore the context in which De Marees' account was created. Since variations of the images and text were repeated in other European travel collections and decorated maps, Sutton is able to trace how the framing of text and image shaped the formation of knowledge that continued to be repeated and distilled in later European depictions of Africans. She reads the engravings in De Marees' account as a demonstration of the intertwining domains of the Dutch pictorial tradition, intellectual inquiry, and Dutch mercantilism. At the same time, by analyzing the marketing tactics of the publisher, Cornelis Claesz, this study illuminates how early modern epistemological processes were influenced by the commodification of knowledge. Sutton examines the book's construction and marketing to shed new light on the social milieus that shared interests in ethnography, trade, and travel. Exploring how the images and text function together, Sutton suggests that Dutch visual and intellectual traditions informed readers' choices for translating De Marees' text visually. Through the examination of early modern Dutch print culture, Early Modern Dutch Prints of Africa expands the boundaries of our understanding of the European imperial enterprise.

The Jews of the Netherlands were not only nourished by the cultural creativity of the great Sephardi and Ashkenazi centers, East and West, but also at various stages they served as a source of inspiration for Jews elsewhere in the Jewish Diaspora.
