Much of the existing literature seeks to make sense of tourism based on singular approaches such as visuality, identity, mobility, performance and globalised consumption. What is missing, however, is an overarching framework within which these valuable approaches can be located. This book offers one such framework using the concept of dwelling taken from Heidegger and Ingold as the starting point from which to consider the interrelatedness of being, dwelling and tourism. The anthropological focus at the core of the book is infused with multidisciplinary perspectives that draw on a variety of subjects including philosophy, material cultural studies and cultural geography. The main themes include sensuous, material, architectural and earthly dwelling and each chapter features a discussion of the unifying theoretical framework for each theme, followed by an illustrative focus on specific aspects of tourism. This theoretically substantive book will be of interest to anyone involved with tourism research from a wide range of disciplines including anthropology, sociology, geography, cultural studies, leisure studies and tourist studies.

The movement of people, goods, capital and information is a central aspect of living in the inter-connected, globalised late-modern world. Although this broader view of mobility is recognized, this book focuses mainly on migration or the movement of people and examines multiple dwelling as a societal response to the major influences of increased mobility and amenity tourism (visiting or residing in high quality landscapes such as mountains, beaches and forests for leisure experiences). It considers the modern-day meaning of multiple dwelling, how it affects personal identity and the meaning of 'home' and its impacts on host communities and landscapes. This book is of significant interest to those working in the areas of tourism, leisure, geography, outdoor recreation, sociology and anthropology.

Second Home Tourism In Europe written by Zoran Roca and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-01 with Political Science categories.

Bringing together a wide range of studies from twelve European countries, this book offers a state-of-the-art overview of the driving forces behind spatial diversity and social complexity inherent in second home expansion in all parts of the continent - from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean and from the British Isles to Russia - in the context of contemporary mobility patterns largely induced by tourism. As befits the overall conception of the book as a compendium of current second home research, planning and policy issues, the book endorses the following: multidisciplinary approaches to the second home phenomenon as an expression of the ’leisure class’ mobility and recreation-based lifestyles, as well as a constitutive element of post-productivist land-use patterns and landscape change; and socio-economic and territorial development planning and policy-related perspectives on social change and spatial re-organization provoked by the expansion of second home tourism in times of prosperity and crisis. ’This book shows that second home tourism has become such an important sector of the economy that it is no longer possible to let it develop freely: it is the source of new forms of social deprivation; it generates residential economies that are particularly sensitive to the economic cycle; it often impairs beautiful landscapes and increases human pressure on natural environments. As a result, it is one of the major physical planning stakes of touristic areas’ (From the concluding essay by Paul Claval, Université de Paris I - Sorbonne, Paris, France).

In an era of increasing mobilities, places of residence are still vital. Unlike commuting, migrating or travelling, dwelling usually evokes – at least in modern Western thought – the idea of an immobile, private place to rest. This book explores the places, spaces and practices of dwelling in mobile times, and considers dwelling under the umbrella of broader transformations in society. The manifestations of these transformations are carved out on the level of everyday practices and experiences. Bringing together eight case studies from Europe, the USA and Asia on subjects such as gentrification, homelessness and displaced persons, multi-local and diasporic lifeworlds, professional elites, and tourism, the book explores various and complex entanglements of mobilities and dwelling in detail. In doing so, the contributors critically analyse who may be, or has to be, mobile under which circumstances at present. This book thus demonstrates that mobility is more than movement between localities, and that to dwell is more than to be at a locality. Instead, mobilities and dwelling are both shaped and challenged by strong but shifting power relations and are thus deeply contested. This book was originally published as a special issue of Cultural Studies.

Creating Heritage For Tourism written by Catherine Palmer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-27 with Business & Economics categories.

What does ‘heritage’ mean in the twenty-first century? Traditional ideas of heritage involve places where objects, landscapes, people and ideas are venerated and reproduced over time as an inheritance for future generations. To speak of heritage is to speak of a relationship between the past, the present and the future. However, it is a past recreated for economic gain, hence sectors such as culinary tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism and film tourism have employed the heritage label to attract visitors. This interdisciplinary book furthers understanding on how heritage is socially constructed, interpreted and experienced within different geographic and cultural contexts, in both Western and non-Western settings. Subjects discussed include Welsh linguistic heritage, tango, mushroom tourism, Turkish coffee, literary tourism and the techniques employed to construct tourist accommodation. By focusing upon heritage creation in the context of tourism, the book moves beyond traditional debates about ‘authentic heritage’ to focus on how something becomes heritage for use in the present. This timely volume will be of interest to students and researchers in tourism, heritage studies, geography, museum studies and cultural studies.

In the period after their military service, Jewish Israeli youth customarily embark on a unique touristic practice: the backpacking trip. Combining sociological, anthropological, and psychological research—based on innovative fieldwork conducted with Israeli backpackers in Israel and abroad—this book depicts the complex relationship between the traveling youth and their society of origin. Via a perspective the editors term "outside-in," we learn how social and cultural tensions and tenets, identities, fantasies, and preoccupations are acted out within a symbolic, touristic space by scores of Israeli youth.
