Recent years have witnessed the ascendance of a new way to conceptualize and investigate the nature of dynamism at different levels of psychological reality. Areas of inquiry as diverse as cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, organizational behavior, and political sociology are being reframed in terms that allow rigorous and precise insight into basic dynamic processes. There are signs that this new approach to dynamics is emerging as a potentially integrative paradigm for personality and social psychology as well. This special issue highlights this new paradigm and illustrates its relevance to a broad spectrum of topics in personality and social psychology.

“Many major ideas have been borne out [of his theories] and are still relevant today.” —Huffington Post One of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s most prominent ideas was that of the id, the ego, and the super-ego—the three main factors behind the workings of the human mind. Freud claimed these components of the human psyche controlled all processes of personality, behaviors, and traits in a person. The Id was a person’s most basic and impulsive instincts—the ones that feed into our deepest desires and physical needs. The Super-Ego was the opposite of the id. This component controlled our highest morals and standards, operating through our conscience and making us desire to be our most ideal-selves. The piece in the middle is the Ego. The ego mediates between the id and realities of the world around us, while being supervised (and guilted) by the super-ego. In this new edition of his book, The Ego and the Id, Sigmund Freud delves deeper into the concepts of the human mind and the results of the conflicts and workings between them.

This book Beyond the Mind: Cultural Dynamics of the Psyche is unusual in the content and it the format. That’s why it requires an unusual look. It has to do with a man, an intellectual journey and with uncountable travels across the world over the last two decades. This man is Jaan Valsiner and here you will read of his restless effort of elaborating ideas while going in different places as invited keynote. This book is mainly about his intellectual trajectory, which touches several places and several and interconnected topics. This book is about the “minutes” of his “bigger” and well organize works and also it is a collection of only apparently fragmented texts (mainly keynote lectures, unpublished or rejected papers) where the readers will see the “step- by-step” elaboration over the years of new ideas, theories, models and even schemas (which Jaan likes very much—maybe especially as he claims basic inability to draw anything).

Excerpt from Problems in Dynamic Psychology: A Critique of Psychoanalysis, and Suggested Formulations It is only fair to warn the prospective reader of what is before him. This book is not a systematic treatise on psychopathology or psychoanalysis but, rather, a discussion of some of the fundamental problems which must be solved before our knowledge in this field may be accurately systematized. Limitations of space have forced me to omit description of phenomena and to confine myself to exposition of the hypotheses put forward to correlate these phenomena. Some knowledge of psychopathology is therefore necessary for proper understanding of the text, particularly of Part I, which (with the exception of some pages in the chapter on dreams) is purely critical. This knowledge, however, is already possessed by many laymen who have read the current popular literature in this field. Dynamic psychology is a useful term which covers the study of instincts, motives, emotions and imaginative (or "autistic") thinking as opposed to the more static functions of attention, perception, memory and similar conscious, logical processes. A rough analogy may make this discrimination clearer. One could observe the various mechanisms in an automobile, see how the pistons turn the crank shaft, how the transmission acts, what the differential does and so on. But all this would throw no light on what makes the engine go. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
