The dynamic range of a parametric amplifier is limited by the available pump power and the finite curvature of the varactor q-v characteristic, and established techniques for extending the dynamic range rely upon the application of high pump power levels. The achievement of high power outputs from solid-state sources is usually accompanied by sideband noise around the pump frequency, which is transferred to the receiver passband when a large signal is present at the input. The objective of this work is therefore to investigate means of extending the dynamic range of parametric amplifiers by mutual cancellation techniques involving interaction of moderately pumped parametric amplifiers. Active compensation has been used for broadbanding through compensating reactance changes in the amplifier impedance. The same technique is investigated here for compensating for impedance changes due to increased signal level. The parameters of the combining network optimised for distortion cancellation are found to be different from those for broadbanding. In particular stability analysis demonstrate that a stabilizing resonator is essential for most practical parametric amplifiers. Several analytical procedures for predicting parametric amplifier distortion performance are evaluated for both single paramps and the compensating pair configuration and it is demonstrated that cancellation occurs over a narrowband compared with the compensated amplifier bandwidth. Volterra-series representation of the input-output non-linear relationship was found to give the most exact prediction of the system performance but the application of approximate analysis is also justified under some input signal conditions. Experimental validation of the theoretical results was undertaken for different parametric amplifiers and excellent agreement between measured and predicted performance was observed.

This book is dedicated to the analysis of parametric amplification with special emphasis on the MOS discrete-time implementation. This implementation is demonstrated by the presentation of several circuits where the MOS parametric amplifier cell is used: small gain amplifier, comparator with embedded pre-amplification, discrete-time mixer/IIR-Filter, and analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Experimental results are shown to validate the overall design technique.
