There is a discussion of the fundamental principles of parametric amplification, and a quantitive treatment which is valid in the limit of very high Q diodes. Design formulas from the literature are given and discussed for the more practical case of finite Q diodes. An engineering discussion of noise in amplifying systems is presented, because the most important characteristic of parametric amplifiers and converters is low noise. Since the parametric amplifier is built up from a twoterminal negative resistance, it is qualitatively different from the conventional amplifier (such as the vacuum tube triode and traveling wave tube). For this reason some basic material on the properties of negative resistance amplifiers is included. Several typical parametric amplifiers are presented and discussed. Information is included which may be of assistance to a systems designer who is weighing the merits of the parametric amplifier against some other amplifier in a system design. Several examples of system design are given. Finally, some recent experimental data are discussed which suggest that in the future the parametric amplifier will completely prevail over the maser. The dynamic range of a parametric amplifier is limited by the available pump power and the finite curvature of the varactor q-v characteristic, and established techniques for extending the dynamic range rely upon the application of high pump power levels. The achievement of high power outputs from solid-state sources is usually accompanied by sideband noise around the pump frequency, which is transferred to the receiver passband when a large signal is present at the input. The objective of this work is therefore to investigate means of extending the dynamic range of parametric amplifiers by mutual cancellation techniques involving interaction of moderately pumped parametric amplifiers. Active compensation has been used for broadbanding through compensating reactance changes in the amplifier impedance. The same technique is investigated here for compensating for impedance changes due to increased signal level. The parameters of the combining network optimised for distortion cancellation are found to be different from those for broadbanding. In particular stability analysis demonstrate that a stabilizing resonator is essential for most practical parametric amplifiers. Several analytical procedures for predicting parametric amplifier distortion performance are evaluated for both single paramps and the compensating pair configuration and it is demonstrated that cancellation occurs over a narrowband compared with the compensated amplifier bandwidth. Volterra-series representation of the input-output non-linear relationship was found to give the most exact prediction of the system performance but the application of approximate analysis is also justified under some input signal conditions. Experimental validation of the theoretical results was undertaken for different parametric amplifiers and excellent agreement between measured and predicted performance was observed.

The objective of this research is to develop, characterize, and demonstrate novel parametric architectures capable of wideband operation while maintaining high gain and stability. To begin the study, phase-incoherent upconverting parametric amplifiers will be explored by first developing a set of analytical models describing their achievable gain and efficiency. These models will provide a set of design tools to optimize and evaluate prototype circuit boards. The prototype boards will then be used to demonstrate their achievable gain, bandwidth, efficiency, and stability. Further investigation of the analytical models and data collected from the prototype boards will conclude bandwidth and gain limitations and end the investigation into phase-incoherent upconverting parametric amplifiers in lieu of negative-resistance parametric amplifiers. Traditionally, there were two versions of negative-resistance parametric amplifiers available: degenerate and non-degenerate. Both modes of operation are considered single-frequency amplifiers because both the input and output frequencies occur at the source frequency. Degenerate parametric amplifiers offer more power gain than their non-degenerate counterpart and do not require additional circuitry for idler currents. As a result, a phase-coherent degenerate parametric amplifier printed circuit board prototype will be built to investigate achievable gain, bandwidth, and stability. Analytical models will be developed to describe the gain and efficiency of phase-coherent degenerate parametric amplifiers. The presence of a negative resistance suggests the possibility of instability under certain operating conditions, therefore, an in-depth stability study of phase-coherent degenerate parametric amplifiers will be performed. The observation of upconversion gain in phase-coherent degenerate parametric amplifiers will spark investigation into a previously unknown parametric architecture: phase-coherent upconverting parametric amplifiers. Using the phase-coherent degenerate parametric amplifier prototype board, stable phase-coherent upconversion with gain will be demonstrated from the source input frequency to its third harmonic. An analytical model describing the large-signal transducer gain of phase-coherent upconverting parametric amplifiers from the first to the third harmonic of the source input will be derived and validated using the prototype board and simulations.
