Agent-based modelling enables the explicit representation of entities and their interaction with each other and the environment, and so it became an important method to study complex systems. Social networks form an important part of agent-based social simulation, as they define the topology of agent interaction. This dissertation initially identifies important properties of social networks and their dynamics and reviews their representation in agent-based models of relevant domains. A classification of levels of detail for the network modelling components initialisation, dynamics of networks, and dynamics on networks is proposed and guides the identification of deficits. A formal, iterative evaluation framework is developed to quantitatively assess network modelling approaches under a set of weighted criteria (representativity, adjustability, validity, and efficiency). The framework is applied to an abstract model of opinion dynamics and to an empirically grounded model of social influence. A lifestyle-specific network survey is designed, conducted, and analysed and helps to ground the evaluation of the network modelling’s representativity on empirical data. The study finds significant differences of degree and distance distributions as well as in the composition of ego networks between lifestyles. New network modelling approaches are developed to account for requirements in agent-based models such as agent-type specific link preferences, degree and distance distributions, community structures, and interaction dynamics. The comparison of simple to elaborated network modelling for the application models shows a significant impact on simulation results, highlighting the need for informed decisions about suitable approaches.

While the significance of networks in various human behavior and activities has a history as long as human's existence, network awareness is a recent scientific phenomenon. The neologism network science is just one or two decades old. Nevertheless, with this limited time, network thinking has substantially reshaped the recent development in economics, and almost all solutions to real-world problems involve the network element. This book integrates agent-based modeling and network science. It is divided into three parts, namely, foundations, primary dynamics on and of social networks, and applications. The authors begin with the network origin of agent-based models, known as cellular automata, and introduce a number of classic models, such as Schelling's segregation model and Axelrod's spatial game. The essence of the foundation part is the network-based agent-based models in which agents follow network-based decision rules. Under the influence of the substantial progress in network science in late 1990s, these models have been extended from using lattices into using small-world networks, scale-free networks, etc. The text also shows that the modern network science mainly driven by game-theorists and sociophysicists has inspired agent-based social scientists to develop alternative formation algorithms, known as agent-based social networks. It reviews a number of pioneering and representative models in this family. Upon the given foundation, the second part reviews three primary forms of network dynamics, such as diffusions, cascades, and influences. These primary dynamics are further extended and enriched by practical networks in goods-and-service markets, labor markets, and international trade. At the end, the book considers two challenging issues using agent-based models of networks: network risks and economic growth.

In the summer of 2002, the Office of Naval Research asked the Committee on Human Factors to hold a workshop on dynamic social network and analysis. The primary purpose of the workshop was to bring together scientists who represent a diversity of views and approaches to share their insights, commentary, and critiques on the developing body of social network analysis research and application. The secondary purpose was to provide sound models and applications for current problems of national importance, with a particular focus on national security. This workshop is one of several activities undertaken by the National Research Council that bears on the contributions of various scientific disciplines to understanding and defending against terrorism. The presentations were grouped in four sessions â€" Social Network Theory Perspectives, Dynamic Social Networks, Metrics and Models, and Networked Worlds â€" each of which concluded with a discussant-led roundtable discussion among the presenters and workshop attendees on the themes and issues raised in the session.

This book uses rigorous mathematical analysis to advance opinion dynamics models for social networks in three major directions. First, a novel model is proposed to capture how a discrepancy between an individual’s private and expressed opinions can develop due to social pressures that arise in group situations or through extremists deliberately shaping public opinion. Detailed theoretical analysis of the final opinion distribution is followed by use of the model to study Asch’s seminal experiments on conformity, and the phenomenon of pluralistic ignorance. Second, the DeGroot-Friedkin model for evolution of an individual’s social power (self-confidence) is developed in a number of directions. The key result establishes that an individual’s initial social power is forgotten exponentially fast, even when the network changes over time; eventually, an individual’s social power depends only on the (changing) network structure. Last, a model for the simultaneous discussion of multiple logically interdependent topics is proposed. To ensure that a consensus across the opinions of all individuals is achieved, it turns out that the interpersonal interactions must be weaker than an individual’s introspective cognitive process for establishing logical consistency among the topics. Otherwise, the individual may experience cognitive overload and the opinion system becomes unstable. Conclusions of interest to control engineers, social scientists, and researchers from other relevant disciplines are discussed throughout the thesis with support from both social science and control literature.

In the last few years there has been a growing interest in using computers not only for quantitative but also for qualitative content analyses of various kinds of texts and unstructured interviews (Fielding and Lee 1993, Kelle 1998, Kuckartz 2001, Miles and Huberman 2005, Lewins and Silver 2007). This trend has given rise to the development of new software products such as MAXqda, NVivo, NUD. IST, and ATLAS. ti, which can be used for automatic coding, text retrieval, hyp- linking of related text segments, etc. Some of these programs such as ATLAS. ti or MAXqda even allow to represent the results of qualitative content analyses in graphical form as semantic networks of coded texts (Sowa 1984: 76 ff. , Lewins and Silver 2007: 179 ff. ). Such networks consist of 1. text segments or so-called quotations, which generally constitute a n- overlapping partition of the analyzed text corpus, 2. codes, which are classificatory attributes of the mentioned text segments, 3. links, which are the result of the content analytic coding and describe the attribute relations between the mentioned codes and quotations.
