Since the development of the activated sludge process in 1913 many attempts have been made to improve it. One approach has been to increase the oxygen available to the bio-mass. This study combined the use of elevated pressure and high-shear mixing to increase the oxygen transfer. The conventional method of separating activated sludge has been flocculation followed by sedimentation. High-shear mixing breaks up the bio-mass thus hindering flocculation. Flotation, a method of solid-liquid separation used in industrial processes, could utilize the dissolved air released when the elevated pressure is released. A laboratory-scale, activated sludge treatment unit was operated at various combinations of pressure and mixing. The solid-liquid separation characteristics of the mixed liquor were studied. Separation by settling was investigated when the unit was operated at atmospheric pressure and separation by flotation was investigated when the unit was operated at an elevated pressure of 30 psig. It was concluded from these tests that: (1) the effluent provided by sedimentation and flotation following medium and high-shear mixing is not adequate for discharge to most water-courses. (2) Flotation does not yield as clear an effluent as sedimentation. (3) Suspended solids removal by flotation requires a shorter detention time than by sedimentation. (4) Flotation yields a denser sludge than sedimentation. (5) In the flotation process no advantage was found by using a pressure release of more than 20 psi.

El sistema de fangs activats és el tractament biològic més àmpliament utilitzat arreu del món per la depuració daigües residuals. El seu funcionament depèn de la correcta operació tant del reactor biològic com del decantador secundari. Quan la fase de sedimentació no es realitza correctament, la biomassa no decantada sescapa amb lefluent causant un impacte sobre el medi receptor. Els problemes de separació de sòlids, són actualment una de les principals causes dineficiència en loperació dels sistemes de fangs activats arreu del món. Inclouen: bulking filamentós, bulking viscós, escumes biològiques, creixement dispers, flòcul pin-point i desnitrificació incontrolada. Lorigen dels problemes de separació generalment es troba en un desequilibri entre les principals comunitats de microorganismes implicades en la sedimentació de la biomassa: els bacteris formadors de flòcul i els bacteris filamentosos. Degut a aquest origen microbiològic, la seva identificació i control no és una tasca fàcil pels caps de planta. Els Sistemes de Suport a la Presa de Decisions basats en el coneixement (KBDSS) són un grup deines informàtiques caracteritzades per la seva capacitat de representar coneixement heurístic i tractar grans quantitats de dades. Lobjectiu de la present tesi és el desenvolupament i validació dun KBDSS específicament dissenyat per donar suport als caps de planta en el control dels problemes de separació de sòlids dorígen microbiològic en els sistemes de fangs activats. Per aconseguir aquest objectiu principal, el KBDSS ha de presentar les següents característiques: (1) la implementació del sistema ha de ser viable i realista per garantir el seu correcte funcionament; (2) el raonament del sistema ha de ser dinàmic i evolutiu per adaptar-se a les necessitats del domini al qual es vol aplicar i (3) el raonament del sistema ha de ser intelligent. En primer lloc, a fi de garantir la viabilitat del sistema, sha realitzat un estudi a petita escala (Catalunya) que ha permès det.
