This reference develops the fundamental concepts of compressible fluid flow by clearly illustrating their applications in real-world practice through the use of numerous worked-out examples and problems. The book covers concepts of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics which relate directly to compressible flow; discusses isentropic flow through a variable-area duct; describes normal shock waves, including moving shock waves and shock-tube analysis; explores the effects of friction and heat interaction on the flow of a compressible fluid; covers two-dimensional shock and expansion waves; provides a treatment of linearized flow; discusses unsteady wave propagation and computational methods in fluid dynamics; provides several numerical methods for solving linear and nonlinear equations encountered in compressible flow; offers modern computational methods for solving nonintegrable equations; and describes methods of measurement in high-speed flow. Suitable for the practicing engineer engaged in compressible-flow applications.

Compressible Fluid Dynamics (or Gas Dynamics) has a wide range of applications in Mechanical, Aeronautical and Chemical Engineering. It plays a significant role in the design and development of compressors, turbines, missiles, rockets and aircrafts. This comprehensive and systematically organized book gives a clear analysis of the fundamental principles of Compressible Fluid Dynamics. It discusses in rich detail such topics as isentropic, Fanno, Rayleigh, simple and generalised one-dimensional flows. Besides, it covers topics such as conservation laws for compressible flow, normal and oblique shock waves, and measurement in compressible flow. Finally, the book concludes with detailed discussions on propulsive devices. The text is amply illustrated with worked-out examples, tables and diagrams to enable the students to comprehend the subject with ease. Intended as a text for undergraduate students of Mechanical, Aeronautical and Chemical Engineering, the book would also be extremely useful for practising engineers.

This book offers comprehensive coverage of compressible flow phenomena and their applications, and is intended for undergraduate/graduate students, practicing professionals, and researchers interested in the topic. Thanks to the clear explanations provided of a wide range of basic principles, the equations and formulas presented here can be understood with only a basic grasp of mathematics. The book particularly focuses on shock waves, offering a unique approach to the derivation of shock wave relations from conservation relations in fluids together with a contact surface, slip line or surface; in addition, the thrust of a rocket engine and that of an air-breathing engine are also formulated. Furthermore, the book covers important fundamentals of various aspects of physical fluid dynamics and engineering, including one-dimensional unsteady flows, and two-dimensional flows, in which oblique shock waves and Prandtl-Meyer expansion can be observed.

Compressibility is a property inherent in any material, but it does not always manifest itself. Experience suggests that it affects the medium motion only at velocities comparable to the speed of sound. Why do we study compressibility? It turns out that in order to calculate the aircraft streamlining or the internal flow in its engine, or the shell muzzle velocity, or the dynamic load of a shock wave from an accidental blast on a structural element, and in many other cases it is necessary to know and understand the laws of the Dynamics of Compressible Media (DCM) and be able to apply them in practice. This textbook is designed to help readers achieve this goal and learn the basics of DCM. This field of knowledge is high-tech and always focuses on the future: modern developments of hypersonic aircraft, designing more advanced structural elements for airplanes and helicopters, calculating the car aerodynamics, etc. Paradoxes have always given impetus to the search for new technological devices. Unusual effects in DCM include the flow chocking in supersonic outflow from reservoirs (Sect.2.2); the shock wave formation inside an initially smooth flow (Sect.5.3); the generation of a "spallation saucer" of armor inside a tank when a shell hits it (Sect.5.5); the dog-leg of a plane discontinuity surface at shockwave reflection from a rigid wall (Sec.8.1). The way to understand these and other effects is through the creation of quantitative models of a moving compressible fluid.

Theoretical And Computational Dynamics Of A Compressible Flow written by Shih-I Pai and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-08 with Medical categories.

The purpose of this book is to give an introduction to the theoretical and computational fluid dynamics of a compressible fluid. Emphasis is laid on the basic assumptions and the formulation of the theory of compressible flow as well as on the methods of solving problems. This book is intended for the students of fluid dynamics who are interested in the essential results and the useful techniques in the theoretical analysis and numerical methods of compressible flow. The authors also hope that the book may serve as a useful reference to research workers in this field. After the introduction, the thermodynamical and physical properties of gases are briefly reviewed. These serve as a foundation for the fluid dynamics of compressible fluid. In order to limit the size of this book, we consider main ly the flow of an ideal compressible fluid in which the effects of transport phenomena are neglected (Chapter I to XVI). However, the transport phenomena do have much influence on the flow ofa compressible fluid. Hence in Chapter XVII, some basic concepts of transport phenomena are discussed, which prepare the students for further study of some important aspects of a compressible fluid flow.

This book reports on advanced theories and methods aimed at characterizing the dynamics of non-ideal compressible fluids. A special emphasis is given to research fostering the use of non-ideal compressible fluids for propulsion and power engineering. Both numerical and experimental studies, as well as simulations, are described in the book, which is based on selected contributions and keynote lectures presented at the 2nd International Seminar on Non-Ideal Compressible-Fluid Dynamics for Propulsion & Power. Held on October 4-5 in Bochum, Germany, the seminar aimed at fostering collaborations between academics and professionals. The two perspectives have been gathered together in this book, which offers a timely guide to advanced fundamentals, innovative methods and current applications of non-ideal compressible fluids to developing turbomachines, and for propulsion and power generation.
