The coastal zone is the host to many human activities, which have significantly increased in the last decades. However, sea level rise and more frequent storm events severely affect beaches and coastal structures, with negative consequences and dramatic impacts on coastal communities. These aspects add to typical coastal problems, like flooding and beach erosion, which already leading to large economic losses and human fatalities. Modeling is thus fundamental for an exhaustive understanding of the nearshore region in the present and future environment. Innovative tools and technologies may help to better understand coastal processes in terms of hydrodynamics, sediment transport, bed morphology, and their interaction with coastal structures. This book collects several contributions focusing on nearshore dynamics, and span among several time and spatial scales using both physical and numerical approaches. The aim is to describe the most recent advances in coastal dynamics.

In Physical Processes in Estuaries the present day knowledge of the physics of transport phenomena in estuaries and their mathematical treatment is summarized: It is divided into following parts: - Water movements in estuaries - Estuarine fronts and river plumes - Internal waves and interface stability - Fine sediment transport, aggregation of particles, settling velocity of mud flocs - Sedimentation and erosion of fine sediments. For each topic an up-to-date review and recommendations for future research are given, followed by results of original studies. Since estuarine environments are the first to be threatened by urbanization and industrial exploitation this book is an important tool for students and researchers of environmental problems as well as for consultants and water authorities.

A slim volume that meticulously examine the deposition of natural and cultural layers during the last millennia based on an analysis of ancient Eskimo settlements in a specific region on the Bering Strait. The invesigation is principally biological but the authors use palaeoethnographic and archaeological evidence when to aid their interpretation of the osteological material. Reconstructions of the past environment, mammal and bird populations and an assessment of the affects of human hunting and farming are supported by numerous diagrams, profile drawings, tables and radiocarbon dating lists.

This book covers water waves, surf zone hydrodynamics, tides in oceans and estuaries, storm surges, estuarine mixing, basic sediment transport, coastal morphodynamics and coastal groundwater dynamics. It is an introductory treatment, suitable for a first course in coastal and estuarine processes for earth scientists or engineers. Yet, there are substantial amounts of new material that are included, such as the explicit, analytical treatment of transient, forced long waves. Inclusion of this material will in turn strongly enhance the introductory treatment of tsunami, storm surges and surf beat. The treatment of sine wave theory emphasizes expressions which are explicit in the water depth h (using koh instead of kh) so that they can easily be differentiated or integrated with respect to h. This is a major pedagogical advantage because of the enhanced transparency. The treatment of turbulent mixing includes finite mixing length effects which provide an explanation for differential diffusion of different sediment sizes in suspension. The effects of acceleration skewness and boundary layer streaming are also included in the basic sediment transport models. The inclusion of beach groundwater dynamics — including the mechanisms by which waves as well as tides drive groundwater motion — provides a link between the previously unconnected fields of coastal hydraulics and regional groundwater modeling.Serving as a good reference book, it is fully indexed and comprehensively cross referenced. Abundant references to more detailed texts are also provided.

This textbook on Coastal Dynamics focuses on the interrelation between physical wave, flow and sediment transport phenomena and the resulting morphodynamics of a wide variety of coastal systems. The textbook is unique in that it explicitly connects the dynamics of open coasts and tidal basins; not only is the interaction between open coasts and tidal basins of basic importance for the evolution of most coastal systems, but describing the similarities between their physical processes is highly instructive as well. This textbook emphasizes these similarities to the benefit of understanding shared processes such as nonlinearities in flow and sediment transport. Some prior knowledge with respect to the dynamics of flow, waves and sediment transport is recommended. The authors would like to track the reach and use of this Open Textbook. Therefore, they would be very pleased if you could fill out a form to provide information on your intended use of this book. The form also provides options to subscribe for update notifications and give feedback.

Coastal Dynamics 2009 is the sixth conference in a sequence of technical speciality conferences bringing together field and laboratory experimentalists, theoreticians and modelers conducting research on the dynamics of the coastal systems. The multidisciplinary Coastal Dynamics 2009 will be of interest to coastal engineers, coastal geologists, oceanographers, and related scientists. It is also of relevance to coastal specialists and managers, and to those interested in preserving coastal zones. In Coastal Dynamics 2009, special emphasis will be placed on the impacts of human activity on dynamic coastal processes.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Coastal and Estuarine Studies, Volume 40. In establishing the peculiar niche of a volume of conference proceedings within the scientific literature, the editor has a responsibility (beyond the culling and processing) to inform readers of the background to the conference, the subject areas and specific foci. More tentatively, underlying directions and common themes should be discerned to perhaps indicate areas of research likely to be fruitful and topical in the next few years. Since many readers will only study selected contributions, the volume is divided into five sections namely:- II. Baroclinic Dynamics; III. Circulation; IV. Sediment Dynamics; V. Sediment Modelling; VI. Applied Studies. This introduction incorporates sub-titles to facilitate the same selectivity.
