The dynamics of dissipative mechanical and structural systems is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories worldwide with ever-increasing sophistication of modeling, analysis and experiments. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the state-of-the-art in the study of friction oscillators. It provides the reader with the fruits of a team effort by leaders in this fascinating field. The present part II of this volume on Dynamics with Friction is a continuation of the previous part I, and is designed to help synthesize our current knowledge regarding the role of friction in mechanical and structural systems as well as everyday life. The topics covered include interaction of vibration and friction at dry sliding contacts, friction-induced instability in disks, dynamics of lubricated flexible links in kinematic chains, modal interactions in periodic structures, dynamics of an experimentally excited beam, transient waves in viscoelastic materials, dynamic stability of plates with damping, friction modeling and dynamic computation, damping through use of passive and semi-active dry friction forces. This book gives a comprehensive picture of dynamics of dissipative mechanical and structural systems. It also gives an up-to-date account of the present state of the field. It will be of interest to engineers, rheologists, material scientists, applied mathematicians, physicists and historians of science and technology.

Mechanics Of Localized Slippage In Tactile Sensing written by Anh-Van Ho and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Localized slippage occurs during any relative sliding of soft contacts, ranging from human fingertips to robotic fingertips. Although this phenomenon is dominant for a very short time prior to gross slippage, localized slippage is a crucial factor for any to-be-developed soft sensing system to respond to slippage before it occurs. The content of this book addresses all aspects of localized slippage, including modeling and simulating it, as well as applying it to the construction of novel sensors with slip tactile perception.

Structural control offers opportunities to design new structures and to retrofit existing structures by the application of counter-forces, smart materials, frictional devices, etc., instead of just increasing the strength of the structure at greater cost. The Association for the Control of Structures (ACS) is promoting in Europe the development of this new technology in architectural design and infrastructure renewal and rehabilitation. The First European Conference on Structural Control was organized as one of the major initiatives toward this objective.

Introduction To Soliton Theory Applications To Mechanics written by Ligia Munteanu and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-07-06 with Mathematics categories.

This monograph is planned to provide the application of the soliton theory to solve certain practical problems selected from the fields of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and biomechanics. The work is based mainly on the authors’ research carried out at their home institutes, and on some specified, significant results existing in the published literature. The methodology to study a given evolution equation is to seek the waves of permanent form, to test whether it possesses any symmetry properties, and whether it is stable and solitonic in nature. Students of physics, applied mathematics, and engineering are usually exposed to various branches of nonlinear mechanics, especially to the soliton theory. The soliton is regarded as an entity, a quasi-particle, which conserves its character and interacts with the surroundings and other solitons as a particle. It is related to a strange phenomenon, which consists in the propagation of certain waves without attenuation in dissipative media. This phenomenon has been known for about 200 years (it was described, for example, by the Joule Verne's novel Les histoires de Jean Marie Cabidoulin, Éd. Hetzel), but its detailed quantitative description became possible only in the last 30 years due to the exceptional development of computers. The discovery of the physical soliton is attributed to John Scott Russell. In 1834, Russell was observing a boat being drawn along a narrow channel by a pair of horses.

Friction-vibration interactions are common but important phenomena in science and engineering. Handbook of Friction-Vibration Interactions introduces the principles and provides the resources to understand and work with them. A unified theoretical framework includes some of the most important engineering applications. The first three chapters in the book introduce basic concepts and analytical methods of friction and vibration. The fourth chapter presents the general principles on friction-vibration interactions, and also touches on various engineering applications. In the fifth chapter the concepts and methods are extended to some of the most critical engineering applications in high-tech industry, presenting the friction-vibration interaction principle and applications in data storage systems. - Covers a key topic in science and engineering, with applications in daily life - Introduces the principles of friction-vibration interactions - Analyzes, presents experiments, and treats real systems ranging from nano to micro to macro scales
