Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: A, University of South Central Los Angeles, course: E-Business, language: English, abstract: In order to reassure online consumers that their transactions are secure and their credit information is safe, governments, merchants, and computer system vendors need to promote the culture of security in e-commerce. Governments need to educate people on security issues and to give up-to-date information on the way of protecting themselves against attacks. Governments need also to set up e-commerce laws and to enforce them so as to take appropriate measures against cyber crime. Merchants need to purchase more sophisticated version of software applications that have strong encryption, firewalls and other security tools. They also need to set up within their business organizations policies regarding security of information systems and should include statements on privacy and security in their websites text and graphics so as to assure online consumers. Vendors of computer systems should acknowledge that they need to be part of the solution to e-commerce security problems. Thus, they need to develop new techniques and new products so as to cope with current and future hackers' attacks. Through such commitment, safety and privacy will be promoted in e-commerce.

From a distance, the concept of e-commerce security seems simple. Just allow authorized people to transact business securely and efficiently through the Internet, and keep unauthorized people away from valuable information. But in today's impersonal and global economy, how can a business or organization really know who they are really allowing into their systems? And how can they be sure unauthorized people are always kept out? In a highly interconnected and transaction-driven world, deciding who should be kept out or included is becoming more difficult every day. Due in part to interdependent global economic conditions, international terrorism concerns and human ingenuity involved with misusing technology for ill gotten gains, e-commerce security is neither simple nor static.

"This is a very important book . . . mandatory reading for anyone thinking about getting into e-commerce."-Peter G. Neumann Moderator of the Risks Forum and author of Computer Related Risks The World Wide Web is changing the way the world engages in business. With this paradigm shift comes uncertainty about how secure e-commerce transactions are over an inherently insecure medium-the Internet. Businesses have learned the hard way that there is no "silver bullet" solution-not encryption, not firewalls, not even secure protocols. Like a chain, the security of e-commerce is only as strong as its weakest link. Written by security expert Anup K. Ghosh, E-Commerce Security highlights the weak links and provides best defenses for individuals and enterprises connected to the Internet. This valuable guide addresses vulnerabilities in four essential components of electronic commerce-the data transport protocol, Web server, Web clients, and the network server operating system. E-Commerce Security: * Exposes the dangers of new Internet innovations in today's Web browsers, including push technology and desktop integration with the Internet * Methodically explains the dangers of active content programs downloaded from Web sites, such as Java applets, ActiveX controls, and JavaScript * Provides a comparison of different secure protocols for e-commerce, including digital cash protocols used in smart cards * Presents security considerations for Web servers, online databases, and server-side application software * Details shortcomings in firewall technology and other host security measures. An in-depth look at the pressing issues involved in protecting an e-business from external threats while safeguarding customer privacy With billions of dollars at stake in e-commerce, companies are becoming much more concerned about security and privacy issues. Hackers have made headlines by breaking into Web sites that aggregate sensitive information about all of us, which has caused growing public concern about personal and financial privacy. Some online businesses are inadvertently "sharing" data with others when they interoperate systems. This book examines the external threats to a company's system and explains how to react if your system and business goals diverge. It also presents a nuts-and-bolts guide to enhancing security and safeguarding gateways. Readers will find an extensive reference section for the many tools, standards, and watchdog agencies that aid in the security/privacy effort.
