El objeto de estudio de esta obra es el “e-learning” o aprendizaje electrónico tanto desde el punto de vista de la definición y estudio de los principales conceptos relativos a este tema como de la determinación de su regulación legal y estatuto jurídico actual y su proyección de futuro. El autor estudia la implicación educativa de este nuevo sistema, haciendo especial hincapié en la formación a distancia conocida tradicionalmente hasta llegar a la actual formación vía Internet, con especial atención a esta modalidad formativa en la educación superior y en los Campus Virtuales. La investigación se centra en el ámbito español y de la Unión Europea, y pretende proporcionar al jurista, y al público en general, una visión de conjunto sobre la regulación jurídica de esta materia, así como sobre serie de premisas de carácter técnico relativas a las TICs (Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación). El estudio se justifica por la importancia de Internet en nuestra sociedad y por su empleo en todos los ámbitos educativos, desde la escuela hasta la Universidad, lo que implica la necesidad de prestar especial atención al régimen jurídico de este tipo de aprendizaje tanto en el mundo académico (escuela, universidad y formación de postgrado) como en el empresarial. La obra se estructura en cuatro apartados. El primero tiene un carácter introductorio y versa, básicamente, sobre el origen y desarrollo de Internet. El segundo se refiere al concepto del aprendizaje electrónico y a los retos y oportunidades que éste ofrece. El tercer apartado se centra en el análisis de las políticas nacionales y de la Unión Europea relativas al “e-learning”. Finalmente, en el cuarto apartado se hace una breve introducción al marco jurídico de la propiedad intelectual en el ámbito de las Nuevas Tecnologías. En su conjunto, se trata de una obra que compendia y expone de forma muy clara los principales temas que afectan a la educación en el ámbito virtual.
