This one-of-a-kind new resource, written by an expert in the field, provides a comprehensive introduction to global e-navigation. This book presents the vision, development, and objectives of this strategy to increase awareness, safety, and security in the navigation of commercial shipping. Current equipment and practices of maritime navigation are discussed including ship reporting, shore based services, communications, and challenges in vessel travel services (VTS) and port areas. This book identifies performance gaps and demonstrates how to identify user needs as well as solutions through gap analysis. E-navigation architectures, solutions, and standards are explored. Readers find useful insight into how new concepts of e-navigation are being adapted internationally and some of the difficulties that will need to be overcome. This resource focuses on the use of e-navigation in security, cyber security, environmental protection, communications, and global and technical standardization. Navigation equipment, systems, displays, bridge systems, and other current equipment and practices are explored in this book. Readers get a look into the future of e-navigation, including the impact that digital globalization, unmanned ships, and big data will have on this strategy.

At first glance there seems to be a fragmented nature of the maritime digital solution market, yet, after reading this book the 'big picture' becomes clear and everything is put into the right context. Over the last decades, and after numerous projects, committee work, and industry initiatives (all described in this book), the contours of E-navigation eventually distilled to a clear structure. On one hand the E-navigation framework provides reliable guidance, but on the other hand leaves sufficient flexibility for further technological and also procedural advancements. Realisations of E-navigation are in use already, being closely linked e.g. with modern integrated ship-bridges, the layout of information on navigational screens, Maritime Single Windows, port-call optimisation platforms, even the entire multi-modal transport chain. Next to the initiatives is Europe, special attention is given to the enormous E-navigation project in the Republic of Korea, targeted to facilitate the country's transition from a ship-building nation to a leader in the maritime digital world. The book not only take s an actual summary of the E-navigation development, but also highlights benefits and opportunities for various stakeholders. The target group includes those operating the ships at sea and at port, business prime movers, formative maritime authorities, and researchers.

The idea of telematics appeared more than a decade ago and it is possible to define it, in a general and simple way, as a communication system for collecting, processing and distributing information. The transport services market is definitely the most important area for telematic applications. Transport-telematics issues constitute a field of knowledge of transport that integrates information technology and telecommunications in applications for managing and controlling traffic in transport systems, stimulating technical and organizational activities that ensure improved effectiveness and safe operation of such systems. Integrated and cooperating telematic applications constitute intelligent transport systems. The basis of such systems is to efficiently collect and process information and to manage its flow within the system. This enables supplying information from almost all areas of transport activities in real time. Intelligent transport––supported by a number of integrated telecommunications, IT measurement and control engineering solutions, and by appropriate tools and software––comprises telematic applications. They have an extensive range of use in many areas of transport, allowing the integration of the means and types of transport, including its infrastructure, business organization and management processes. This monograph is a collection of selected papers presented at the jubilee transport telematics conference, TST 2010, and is the result of the work of many scientists associated with this area of knowledge and who had spent years with the conference.
