Industry has been at the centre of some of the most formidable political and economic debates of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book explores the pivotal decades of the eighteenth-century in which the modern concept of industry was, for the first time, at the heart of heated debates in France and other European countries. The close reading of contemporary debates illuminates the origins of an economic key concept and suggests a fresh perspective on the rise of industry in the eighteenth-century.

This work collects in a single volume and often in their original form the primary texts in the American debate over industrialization between the Revolution and the Civil War. These documents reflect the intellectual and ideological forces behind the promotion of manufactures, as well as the skepticism and resistance which the industrial capitalist aroused in the democratic and agrarian new nation. The collection demonstrates that there was a heated debate over the industrialization of the United States, and the issues reveal much about the shaping of our fundamental institutions. The editors' introduction lays out the major issues, establishes the historical context of the debate, and offers arguments about its significance. The body of the text consists of documents which have hitherto been readily available only to specialists, each with a headnote giving bibliographical sources.Michael Brewster Folsom is executive director of the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham, Massachusetts; Steven D. Lubar is the museum's curator.Dr. Folsom is also general editor of the series Documents in American Industrial History. "The Philosophy of Manufactures "and "The New England Mill Village," 1790-1860 are the first two volumes in the series, which is copublished with the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum.

With the advent of Thatcherism in the UK and Reaganomics in the USA, 'industrial policy' had become something of a discredited notion in the 1980s. The emphasis had shifted to programmes of deregulation, de-nationalization, and tax reform. The essays in this challenging and vigorous collection, first published in 1989, sprung from work that had been conducted in the USA, notably at the Harvard Business School, on reappraising the role of the public sector in industrial management. This American work suggested ways in which public sector and other bodies might have revitalized industrial life. This book is ideal for students of business and economics.

Winner of the Jerry Bentley Prize in World History (American Historical Association). Award-winning historian Priya Satia presents a new history of the Industrial Revolution that positions war and the gun trade squarely at the heart of the rapid growth of technology and Britain’s imperial expansion. Satia’s thorough examination advances a radical new understanding of the historical roots of the violent partnership between the government, military and the economy. Sweeping in its scope and entirely original in its approach, Empire of Guns illuminates Britain’s emergence as a global superpower in a clear and novel light. Reviews of Empire of Guns: 'A fascinating study of the centrality of militarism in 18th-century British life, and how imperial expansion and arms went hand in hand... This book is a triumph.' Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies 'Fascinating.' New York Times ‘A strong narrative bolstered by excellent archival research... tremendous scholarship.’ Booklist ‘Boldly uncovers a history of modern violence and its central role in political, economic, and technological progress. As unsettling as it is bracing.' Pankaj Mishra, author of Age of Anger ‘A solid contribution to the history of technology and commerce, with broad implications for the present.’ Kirkus

Early Development Economics Debates Revisited written by Michele Alacevich and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Banks and Banking Reform categories.

Abstract: Development economics in its early years created the image of a fierce fight between advocates of contrasting theories or approaches- "balanced growth" vs. "unbalanced growth" or "program loans" vs. "project loans." This view has the merit to highlight such conflicts in great detail; yet it fails to take into account the reality of development economics as it was practiced in the field. This paper reassesses these old conflicts by complementing the traditional focus on theoretical debates with an emphasis on the practice of development economics. A particularly interesting example is the debate between Albert Hirschman, one of the fathers of the "unbalanced growth" approach, and Lauchlin Currie, among the advocates of "balanced growth" on how to foster iron production in Colombia in the 1950s. An analysis of the positions held by these two economists shows that they were in fact much less antithetical than is usually held and, indeed, were in some fundamental aspects surprisingly similar. Debates among development economists during the 1950s thus must be explained-at least partially-as the natural dynamics of an emerging discipline that took shape when different groups tried to achieve supremacy-or at least legitimacy-through the creation of mutually delegitimizing systemic theories.
