Maybe the game of golf wasnt invented in Ireland but to most visitors it seems that way. After all, there are more golf courses per square mile in Ireland than in any part of the world. A golfing visit to Ireland will be the trip of a lifetime for many reasons. First, links courses sparkle like an emerald necklace around the coastline of Ireland. It is subjective to pick the best from so many great courses but here are a few: Royal Portrush, Portstewart. Royal County Down, Baltray, Portmarnock, The European Club, Old Head, Waterville, Ballybunion, Tralee, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Connemara, Carne, Enniscrone, Murvagh, Ballyliffin and Rosapenna. Second, the past two decades have brought world class resorts with the finest facilities and championship level courses, including The K Club, Lough Erne, Druids Glen, Mount Wolsely, Killeen Castle, Glasson, Galgorm Castle, Slieve Russell, The Heritage, Powerscourt, Adare, Fota Island, Dromoland Castle and many more. Third, visitors can enjoy over 400 private golf clubs scattered throughout Ireland where greens fees offer excellent value and local members make you feel at home. Not least, the 19th hole is a great opportunity to meet local golfers. An old saying puts it like this: There are no strangers in Ireland, only friends you havent met before. The successes of Irish golfers on the international circuit has also put the spotlight on the great golf found throughout the Island. Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Shane Lowrey and others have been not just successful competitors but wonderful ambassadors for Irish fun and hospitality. I hope you and your friends will come to experience golf in Ireland for yourselves. I can assure you a warm welcome and some wonderful memories. Joe Byrne Executive Vice-President Tourism Ireland

West Scotland is so close to the north east of Ireland that each country can be seen from high ground in the other. A mere 24 kilometers or 15 miles separates the two coasts at their closest. It is not surprising therefore, that similarities in sport, language and culture are to be found in both countries. Scotland received the Irish game of hurling and renamed it shinty; they received the gaelic language and called it gallic, and accepted christianity from the Irish monks. After the Ulster Plantation of 1608, the large flow of Scots into Ulster brought presbyterianism and golf to Ireland.400 years is a long time and that's how long golf has been played in Ireland (and in England). That more ancient stick and ball game played in Ireland called hurling helped the Irish to readily accept golf. It took another two and a half centuries before the first golf clubs as we know them emerged in Ireland. The Irish clubs then established the Golfing Union of Ireland to administer their game. This was the first such national organisation (the R&A is not a national body) in the world and was the model followed by other countries. Ireland was also the first to introduce a coherent, logical, nationwide handicap system.Any activity undertaken by humankind never takes place in a vacuum; the historical context has a substantial say in it. So it was that one of the greatest catastrophes in the then known world- the Great Irish Famine (1845-1847), was the principal reason why today a large Irish diaspora is scattered around the globe, in England, Australia and especially America. For various reasons, the Irish and their descendants who ended up in the U.S.A. found sport to be one social and professional activity for which they had a particular talent, and which was a sure way to climb the social ladder. Irish names are to be found among the star performers in early professional boxing, in baseball, in athletics (including the Olympics) and of relevance here, in golf. Until the last twenty years, more Irish names appeared on the U.S. Open Golf Trophy than on the British one!The following pages explore what the Irish brought to golf at home and abroad.

For anyone planning a dream golfing vacation to Ireland, Trolleys and Squibs is the most comprehensive guidebook in the market. Frustrated by sketchy guidebooks while on a golfing tour, authors Louise and Rick Miracle decided to compile their own definitive guide to Irish links. In addition to its practical travel tips, this book offers insightful essays -- including several by leading figures in Irish golf -- that explain the history and particular character of golfing in Ireland. Vacation planners will especially love the book's extensive, geographically balanced coverage of individual golf courses, presented by way of two whimsically named lists. The Trolleys List contains thorough summaries of 153 courses, including small maps and directions for getting there, scorecard data, descriptions of each course's layout and club facilities, and recommendations on local restaurants and hotels. The Squibs List offers basic information -- addresses, phone numbers, brief descriptions -- about 138 additional golf courses. With Trolleys and Squibs, you can plan a detailed itinerary and make your reservations, even before landing on Irish shores (though armchair travelers as well will gain immense enjoyment from the colorful portraits of the courses and countryside).

Unlike many other books written by American writers for an Aemrican market, Golfing in Ireland is notable in that real understanding, humour and irreverence are key to the visitor being told exactly what they need to know.-The KerrymanIreland is Europe's hottest golfing destination and one of the most popular golf venues for Americans eager to sample the fabled links. Author Rob Armstrong predicted the Irish golf boom in the first edition of Golfing in Ireland; in the third, he revisits old courses that have undergone revision or expansion and uncovers the best of Ireland's new courses. In his crisp, irreverent style, he also points out those courses that have not stood up, those that have been poorly maintained or managed, and those that have simply proved disappointing.Profiled in this edition are: the magnificent Old Head Golf Club in County Cork, one of the most exciting new golf courses in the world; the extraordinarily beautiful new Ring of Kerry Golf and Country Club in County Kerry that overlooks Kenmare Bay; and the expanded golf complex at Ballyliffin in County Donegal. He also reviews several new hotels and restaurants that cater to golfers and are near some of Ireland's best courses. Armstrong's travel tips include a discussion of the Euro, which will soon become the unit of currency in the Irish Republic, and a warning about the proliferation of Irish golf tours.

A Course Called Ireland written by Tom Coyne and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-19 with Travel categories.

An epic Celtic sojourn in search of ancestors, nostalgia, and the world?s greatest round of golf In his thirties, married, and staring down impending fatherhood, Tom Coyne was well familiar with the last refuge of the adult male: the golfing trip. Intent on designing a golf trip to end all others, Coyne looked to Ireland, the place where his father had taught him to love the game years before. As he studied a map of the island and plotted his itinerary, it dawned on Coyne that Ireland was ringed with golf holes. The country began to look like one giant round of golf, so Coyne packed up his clubs and set off to play all of it. And since Irish golfers didn?t take golf carts, neither would he. He would walk the entire way. A Course Called Ireland is the story of a walking- averse golfer who treks his way around an entire country, spending sixteen weeks playing every seaside hole in Ireland and often battling through all four seasons in one Irish afternoon. Coyne plays everything from the top-ranked links in the world to nine-hole courses crowded with livestock. Along the way, he searches out his family?s roots, discovers that a once-poor country has been transformed by an economic boom, and finds that the only thing tougher to escape than Irish sand traps are Irish pubs. By turns hilarious and poetic, A Course Called Ireland is a magnificent tour of a vibrant land and a paean to the world?s greatest game.

Links Golf written by Paul Daley and has been published by Pelican Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-31 with Sports & Recreation categories.

On the short list for the 2000 USGA International Book Award for "outstanding golf book of the year," Links Golf: The Inside Story describes the beautiful land on which the links courses are built. Daley explains the term "links" and discusses their architecture, style, and great clusters. This behind-the-scenes look at the health of links golf in Britain puts an emphasis on elements that are undermining its viability and long-term future. In a time when many treeless courses are claiming to be genuine, Daley explains how to determine what is and what is not a links course. Concentrating on Great Britain and Ireland, he also discusses the vague definition of "links." He examines the unique characteristics of this early form of seaside golf, how geological processes helped shaped the land, and how links golf differs from inland golf.
