The purpose of this volume is to review and discuss key growth factor systems that have been implicated in embryogenesis. Emphasis is placed on the insulin family of peptides, including insulin and the structurally and functionally related insulin-like growth factors. The initial chapters provide a review of basic topics, including developmental genetics, energy metabolism and hormonal signaling mechanisms, which are important prerequisites to the central theme that follows. The book concludes with a brief review of oncogene expression in early development; this new field has contributed significantly to our understanding of how mitogenic signals activate genetic elements responsible for embryonic growth and development. This book presents information important to cell biologists, endocrinologists, biological chemists, and developmental biologists.

The book considers signaling events from the zygote embryo through to the blastocyst with relevant data from embryonic stem (ES) cells, including dialogue with the extracellular environment and with the maternal tract during the implantation process. Application of the knowledge described to improve the success of human and animal assisted conception is considered where appropriate, but the focus is largely on fundamental rather than applied cell/molecular biology, as this is the area that has historically been neglected. While the general features of metabolism during preimplantation development are well established, especially in terms of nutrient requirements, uptake and fate, remarkably little is known about early embryo signaling events, intracellular or intercellular, between individual embryos in vitro or with the female reproductive tract in vivo. This contrasts with the wealth of information on cell signaling in somatic cells and tissues, as a glance at any textbook of biochemistry illustrates. This lack of information is such that our understanding of the molecular cell biology of early embryos -- a prerequisite to defining the mechanisms which regulate development at this critical stage of the life cycle -- is seriously incomplete. This volume is the first to address this issue by describing the current state of knowledge on cell signaling during mammalian early embryo development and highlighting priority areas for research.

Recent progress in cell and molecular biology has profound implications for understanding the developmental biology of mammalian embryos. The unifying theme of this volume is a cellular and molecular approach to gametogenesis, embryogenesis, and maternal-fetal interactions in the developmental biology of agriculturally significant mammals. Great progress has been achieved in our understanding of preimplantation mammalian embryogenesis in laboratory species, particularly the mouse, through application of cell and embryo culture methods, cell biological techniques, and, more recently, recombinant DNA technology. A major remaining opportunity is the application of these techniques to problems in domestic species, such as improved methods for in vitro growth and maturation of oocytes, egg and embryo cryopreservation, and genetic manipulation to enhance productivity and herd quality. The authors review current knowledge in key areas, emphasizing new approaches to unsolved problems in the developmental biology of domestic species.

The last ten years have shown a dramatic revolution in our understanding of early animal development. This new edition of the successful first edition describes the result of this revolution and explains how the body plan of an embryo emerges from the newly fertilised egg. The book starts with a critical discussion of embryological concepts and explains in simple terms the mathematics of cell states, morphogen gradients and threshold responses. The experimental evidence on the mechanism of regional specification in Xenopus, molluscs, annelids, ascidians as well as Caenorhabditis, the mouse, the chick and Drosophila is then discussed. The whole chapter devoted to the exciting developments in Drosophila provides a clear guide to the subject, including a new table outlining the developmentally important genes. The emphasis throughout is on conceptual clarity and unity: bringing together the mathematical models, embryological experiments and molecular biology into a single, comprehensive coherent account.
