This study considers how five women from the Sidney and Cavendish families use written conversational interaction, what I call textual conversation, to mediate relationships within and through their texts. Attention to the interactive dimensions of the writings of Mary Sidney Herbert, Mary Wroth, Margaret Cavendish, Jane Cavendish, and Elizabeth Brackley sheds important insight into the question of how these writers were negotiating the complex interrelationship among language, architectural and physiological space, and political and sexual agency. Conversation, both written and oral, was a vital political tool for male courtiers in the early modern period. I argue not only that Pembroke, Wroth, Cavendish, and her stepdaughters were attuned to the strategic potential of conversational interchange but that they redeployed the tenets of decorous oral and epistolary conversation in their writings to construct authoritative speaking positions for themselves and their female protagonists. The conditions for such agency are paradoxically fostered through the construction of fictional conversational spaces. Chapter One considers the conflated spaces of the closet, cave, and heart within which Pembroke's psalmist converses with God. Chapter Two explores the ludic spaces that pervade Mary Wroth's closet drama Love's Victory (c. 1620) and sonnet sequence Pamphilia to Amphilanthus (1621). Chapter Three focuses on the space of the salon in relation to Jane Cavendish's occasional poems and collaborative household drama The Concealed Fancies (c. 1645), co-authored with her sister Elizabeth Brackley, while Chapter Four delves into the fantasy social space of Margaret Cavendish's epistolary paratext. In each case, the delimitation of conversational boundaries, coupled with the development of alternative conversational codes, sanctions considerably more authority within an interchange than would be possible in oral contexts. Like the exclusive closets and courts characteristic of humanist dialogues, these spaces create the possibility for simultaneously pointed and civil critique and train female speakers in the powerful potential of language use. My readings of textual conversation demonstrate its significance as a form of rhetorical practice and situate it as an alternative site of social interaction that facilitates political alliance and self-authorization even as it problematizes the boundaries between public and private, speaker and addressee.

Structures and Subjectivities refers to what we can and probably cannot know about women in the early modern period. Scholars study the societal structures their disciplines call attention to; they are left to infer the subjectivities, the lived experience, of women whose lives they attempt to reconstruct. The authors of the essays in the volume, the fifth to emerge from conferences held by the University of Maryland's Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies, place the largest possible meanings on structures. They consider geographical boundaries and political and ecclesiastical institutions, the gendering of hierarchies and the power of place, the spaces that women constructed, inhabited, traveled in and worked in and, by extension, the literary and artistic conventions that both enabled and constrained their artistic production. In the classical period, conversation referred to real conversations, conducted in the leisure time of noble men, and concerned with indefinite philosophical topics. Christianity inflected conversation with universal aspirations during the medieval centuries and the ars dictaminis, the art of letter writing, increased the importance of this written analogue of conversation. The Renaissance humanists from Petrarch onward further transformed conversation, and its genre analogues of dialogue and letter, by transforming it into a metaphor of increasing scope. This expanded realm of humanist conversation bifurcated in Renaissance and early modern Europe. The Concept of Conversation traces the way the rise of conversation spread out from the history of rhetoric to include the histories of friendship, the court and the salon, the Republic of Letters, periodical press and women. Nancy Gutierrez's exploration of female food refusal during the early modern period contributes to the ongoing conversation about female subjectivity and agency in a number of ways. She joins such scholars as Gail Kern Paster, Jonathan Sawday, and Michael Schoenfeldt, who locate early modern ideas of selfhood in the age's understanding of the body and bodily functions, that is, the recognition that behavior and feelings are a result of the internal workings of the body. Exploring the portrayals of the anorectic woman in the work of Ford, Shakespeare, Heywood and others and arguing that the survival of these women undermines regulatory policies exercised over them by those in authority, Gutierrez here demonstrates how female food refusal is a unique demonstration of individuality. The chapters of this book reveal how the common cultural association of women and food manifests itself in the early modern period-not as religious expression, which is the medieval representation, and not as an expression of dysfunctional adolescence and maturation, our own contemporary view, but rather as a trope in which the female body is a site of political apprehension and cultural change. This study is neither a history nor a survey of the anorectic female body in early modern England, but rather individual yet related discussions in which the starved female body is seen to signify certain (un)expressed tensions within the culture.

Conversational Exchanges in Early Modern England (1549–1640) presents an opportunity to understand how texts, performances, politics, and historical topics intersected and informed cultural productions during this period. These analyses of conversational exchanges across genres permit readers to grasp how conversation functioned as both a compositional methodology and an interpretive hermeneutic in early modern England. The essays gathered here adopt eclectic critical approaches from the perspectives of historicism, gender studies, print culture studies, performance studies, object-oriented ontologies, and the digital humanities to collectively argue that “conversation” is not only a site of reproductive intercourse, but one of metamorphic between-ness. As this book demonstrates, conversation extends what is conventionally thought of as “source study” by treating multiple sources as active interlocutors. These essays discuss how writers of this period push the boundaries of conventional, diachronic imitation by engaging with ancient and/or contemporary sources to lend a sense of immediacy to the subject at hand. Each contribution examines the varying degrees to which “conversation” carries within itself a sense of internal crisis, a turning back and forth, a form of sexual and textual intercourse that does not simply reproduce, but metamorphoses with each interaction.
