Structures and Subjectivities refers to what we can and probably cannot know about women in the early modern period. Scholars study the societal structures their disciplines call attention to; they are left to infer the subjectivities, the lived experience, of women whose lives they attempt to reconstruct. The authors of the essays in the volume, the fifth to emerge from conferences held by the University of Maryland's Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies, place the largest possible meanings on structures. They consider geographical boundaries and political and ecclesiastical institutions, the gendering of hierarchies and the power of place, the spaces that women constructed, inhabited, traveled in and worked in and, by extension, the literary and artistic conventions that both enabled and constrained their artistic production. In Contexts of Being: The Intersubjective Foundations of Psychological Life, Robert Stolorow and George Atwood complete the circle begun with Faces in a Cloud (1979) and continued with Structures of Subjectivity (1984) and Psychoanalytic Treatment: An Intersubjective Approach (1987, with Bernard Brandchaft). Having demonstrated the degree to which psychological theory is influenced by the subjective world of the psychological theorist, explored the "structures of subjectivity" that organize the subjective world, and applied the intersubjective perspective to a broad array of clinical issues, they now extend intersubjectivity theory to a rethinking of the foundational pillars of psychoanalytic theory. Stolorow and Atwood begin with a penetrating critique of the concept of the isolated individual mind; this myth, they argue, has long obstructed recognition of the intersubjective foundations of psychological life. They next proceed to a series of chapters that reframe, from the standpoint of intersubjectivity theory, basic assumptions of the psychoanalytic theory of mental life. This book proposes that subjective expression shapes grammatical and lexical patterning in American English conversation. Analyses of structural and functional properties of English conversational utterances indicate that the most frequent combinations of subject, tense, and verb type are those that are used by speakers to personalize their contributions, not to present unmediated descriptions of the world. These findings are informed by current research and practices in linguistics which argue that the emergence, or conventionalization, of linguistic structure is related to the frequency with which speakers use expressions in discourse. The use of conversational data in grammatical analysis illustrates the local and contingent nature of grammar in use and also raises theoretical questions concerning the coherence of linguistic categories, the viability of maintaining a distinction between semantic and pragmatic meaning in analytical practice, and the structural and social interplay of speaker point of view and participant interaction in discourse.

Forms of Life and Subjectivity: Rethinking Sartre’s Philosophy explores the fundamental question of why we act as we do. Informed by an ontological and phenomenological approach, and building mainly, but not exclusively, on the thought of Sartre, Daniel Rueda Garrido considers the concept of a "form of life” as a term that bridges the gap between subjective identity and communities. This first systematic ontology of "forms of life” seeks to understand why we act in certain ways, and why we cling to certain identities, such as nationalisms, social movements, cultural minorities, racism, or religion. The answer, as Rueda Garrido argues, depends on an understanding of ourselves as "forms of life” that remains sensitive to the relationship between ontology and power, between what we want to be and what we ought to be. Structured in seven chapters, Rueda Garrido’s investigation yields illuminating and timely discussions of conversion, the constitution of subjectivity as an intersubjective self, the distinction between imitation and reproduction, the relationship between freedom and facticity, and the dialectical process by which two particular ways of being and acting enter into a situation of assimilation-resistance, as exemplified by capitalist and artistic forms of life.
