A superb collection of 150 black-and-white photographs of 1930s Ladakh, capturing its final days as a hub of trade routes between Tibet and Kashmir, India and Yarkand. These portraits of people, landscapes and Buddhist ceremonies taken by amateur photographer Rupert Wilmot, are notable for their careful composition, fine detail and engaging informality. They have been meticulously researched and captioned by Nicky Harman and Roger Bates, respectively, niece and nephew of Rupert Wilmot, and include maps, an introduction and a bibliography. Of considerable historical and ethnographic interest. Claude Rupert Trench Wilmot (1897-1961) was a British army officer stationed in India during the 1930s, and a talented amateur photographer. Nicky Harman translates Chinese literature, and was formerly a lecturer at Imperial College London. Roger Bates digitized the photographs. A retired engineer, he has many years of experience working in digital photography. At-cost hardcover available here: http://www.lulu.com/shop/roger-bates-and-nicky-harman-and-rupert-wilmot/ahp-31-the-lost-world-of-ladakh-early-photographic-journeys-in-indian-himalaya/paperback/product-21743258.html What other writers have said about The Lost World of Ladakh: “A wonderfully elegaic set of photographs recording a lost world: an almost mediaeval Ladakh untouched by modernity and still living at the hub of the old trans-Himalayan trade routes, a timeless Central Asia where soot writing boards, itinerant monks, arcane astrologers, masked dancers and elaborate turquoise headdresses were ‎still common. ‎These skillfully restored photographs make me ache to cross again the snowy heights of the Zoji-la and to re-visit this most fascinating region to see what is left.” William Dalrymple, author of Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan, 1839-42 “Rupert Wilmot’s pictures are a delight. The monastery images include a spectacular set of the religious dance-drama at Hemis. There is also a visual record of the trades that lifted so many of Ladakh's villagers above the poverty level: the bustle in Leh Bazaar, the interior of a serai, and caravans of sheep, donkeys and ponies. Perhaps the book’s most outstanding feature is the series of portraits of Wilmot’s fellow-travellers and other Ladakhis, most of them in relaxed and cheerful mode, rather than posing stiffly.” Dr Janet Rizvi, writer and historian of Ladakh, Kashmir and the western Himalaya “These illustrations, superb as photographs in their own right, capture in visual form the essence of Ladakhi life as it was in the 1930s. While the Ladakh pictured here is in many ways gone, its legacy lives on in the distinctive culture of present-day Ladakh, which cannot be fully appreciated without a knowledge of its history. In this book we have a unique and vital contribution to that history.” Dr Philip Denwood, Emeritus Reader in Tibetan Studies, SOAS, University of London

In 1931 and 1934, Rupert Wilmont travelled on two of the ancient trade routes into Ladakh - first from Srinagar in the west, and then from the Kullu valley in the south - while serving with his British Army regiment in Northern India. At the time of his journeys, the current roads did not exist, and traditional means of travel, on foot and with pack animals, were the norm. Unlike most other travellers at that time, he confined himself to taking photographs, notable for the variety of people he captured on film and for documenting a now vanished way of life of the region.

Ladakh written by David Vaala and has been published by Schiffer Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Travel categories.

Over the course of five years, photographer David Vaala embedded himself in Ladakh, a mountainous corner of Northwestern India, to capture "Little Tibet": its landscapes, culture, and people. More than 150 full-color, large-format images focus on the rare cham dances, masked dance-dramas, which are a unique aspect of Tibetan Buddhism. Using a make-shift studio, Vaala documented these brief annual ceremonies that narrate the story of Buddhism's spread into Tibetan culture. The images immortalize the cham ceremonies with detailed portraits of individual cham characters from each of the four traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as practiced in Ladakh. Further celebrating this isolated region are spectacular landscapes that feature Ladakh's terrain, nestled between two great mountain ranges, the Himalayas and the Karakoram. Portraits reveal its nomadic people in intimate detail. This book is ideal for those interested in photography, anthropology, world travel, and Tibetan Buddhism and culture.

Ladakh written by Dr Tilak Ranjan Bera and has been published by Partridge Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-01 with Nature categories.

Ladakh is an out-of-the-world destination with a rugged inhospitable terrain, a well-preserved ancient culture and immense natural wealth. This region remained shrouded in mystery for centuries because of its inaccessibility. The harmonious mingling of people of varied origins, distinct cultures and different religions has resulted in a unique fusion of people in Ladakh. Though it has been open to tourism since 1974, construction of motorable roads in difficult terrain and opening the hitherto restricted areas to tourists is a recent phenomenon. Ladakh has become an irresistible destination for nature lovers, researchers and adventure seekers of the world. Dr Tilak Ranjan Bera, born in Kolkata, India, is an avid nature lover and has a passion for travelling, writing and photography. He has authored several pictorial books on India. He was awarded the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship by the United States-India Educational Foundation and Senior Research Fellowship by the Indian Government. He was an Associate at Yale University,USA during the Fulbright Fellowship. The author has explored every corner of Ladakh for three decades and has done extensive studies related to the place. A keen observer, his book contains information on all aspects of Ladakhs natural, cultural and human wealth, described in his unique style and in a lucid manner. He has painstakingly collected photographs and captured various moods of the terrain in different season and presented the rich and fascinating cultural heritage of the region in an interesting manner. Meticulous presentation and exclusive photographs make this book a collectors choice. In this book, the author has presented every aspect of the territory with exclusive photographs and it can easily be considered the best book ever produced on Ladakh by an Indian author. -----Shri Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir A fascinating pictorial display of an amazingly interesting region of the world. With a Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
