A soulful collection of illuminating essays and interviews that explore Black people’s spiritual and scientific connection to the land, waters, and climate, curated by the acclaimed author of Farming While Black Author of Farming While Black and co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, Leah Penniman reminds us that ecological humility is an intrinsic part of Black cultural heritage. While racial capitalism has attempted to sever our connection to the sacred earth for 400 years, Black people have long seen the land and water as family and understood the intrinsic value of nature. This thought-provoking anthology brings together today’s most respected and influential Black environmentalist voices —leaders who have cultivated the skill of listening to the Earth —to share the lessons they have learned. These varied and distinguished experts include Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Alice Walker; the first Queen Mother and official spokesperson for the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Queen Quet; marine biologist, policy expert, and founder and president of Ocean Collectiv, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson; and the Executive Director of the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers, Land Loss Prevention Project, Savi Horne. In Black Earth Wisdom, they address the essential connection between nature and our survival and how runaway consumption and corporate insatiability are harming the earth and every facet of American society, engendering racial violence, food apartheid, and climate injustice. Those whose skin is the color of soil are reviving their ancestral and ancient practice of listening to the earth for guidance. Penniman makes clear that the fight for racial and environmental justice demands that people put our planet first and defer to nature as our ultimate teacher. Contributors include: Alice Walker • adrienne maree brown • Dr. Ross Gay • Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson • Rue Mapp • Dr. Carolyn Finney • Audrey Peterman • Awise Agbaye Wande Abimbola • Ibrahim Abdul-Matin • Kendra Pierre-Louis • Latria Graham • Dr. Lauret Savoy •Ira Wallace • Savi Horne • Dr. Claudia Ford • Dr. J. Earth Wisdom charts John Muir's amazing wilderness adventures and explores the worldview that sprang from them: a way of seeing the world unique in the West, with echoes only in the Taoism of ancient China. So challenging is Muir's philosophy, here termed "earth wisdom," that the environmental movement has let it remain hidden in Muir's little-known journals for a century. But Muir's worldview now provides the "new way of thinking" called for by Pope Francis to rescue humanity from the existential threat of climate change; Earth Wisdom shows how and why, touching on the needed changes in our economy, society, and way of life.

Earth Wisdom Meditations written by Judith Hirst and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12 with Nature categories.

In this book of healing meditations by non-traditional shaman and healer, Judith Hirst, you will discover that there are depths to Nature that you have not imagined. The images in the words spark a memory in the cells that calls each of us to return to our place in Nature. We are part of the whole. As you meditate through each of the beautifully phrased 111 contemplations, you find that you go on a journey of discovery about what Nature is saying. You will observe, with the writer, the messages that suddenly seem so clear. Your first thought is, "Why did I not see that before?" And then you may realize that you have absented yourself from Nature, even though you have walked in many parks and hiked many trails. You have held yourself back from being in full contact with the animals, the trees, and the elements. The stories within each of the meditations remind us that the oldest language is not of words; it is of symbols and pictures. If we take the suggestions in many of the verses to the point of action, then we will find that we regain a bit of our soul each time we allow ourselves to be caught up in the energy. With these meditations, you can be your own guide and walk into different places. Have a wonderful journey ""This is a meditation book like no other - for "Earth Wisdom Meditations" gently connects us to the vast and intricate web of energies that surround us. Judy's thoughts and words inspire us to open our mind and senses to these loving and supportive energies-which in turn enables us to 'hear', to 'notice', and to 'recognize' their soft murmurs." "Judy shares her understanding of this world with such empathy and compassion that one feels immersed with hope and encouragement. Her book is a gift of personal discovery; it provides us with insight into our own unique abilities, and we learn."" - Dianne Steen, Speech Instructor at Mount Royal University, Calgary, Alberta ""This is a truly beautiful book: truth is beautiful. I can say that everyone should read Earth Wisdom Meditations. Buy it for your children, give it to your friends, and certainly read it yourself, over and over."" - Jackie Branagan, Healer, Shaman, and Animal Communicator www.dragonflyessence.com

Pilulaw Khus has devoted her life to tribal, environmental, and human rights issues. With impressive candor and detail, she recounts those struggles here, offering a Native woman’s perspective on California history and the production of knowledge about indigenous peoples. Readers interested in tribal history will find in her story a spiritual counterpoint to prevailing academic views on the complicated reemergence of a Chumash identity. Readers interested in environmental studies will find vital eyewitness accounts of movements to safeguard important sites like Painted Rock and San Simeon Point from developers. Readers interested in indigenous storytelling will find Chumash origin tales and oral history as recounted by a gifted storyteller. The 1978 Point Conception Occupation was a turning point in Pilulaw Khus’s life. In that year excavation began for a new natural gas facility at Point Conception, near Santa Barbara, California. To the Chumash tribal people of the central California coast, this was desecration of sacred land. In the Chumash cosmology, it was the site of the Western Gate, a passageway for spirits to enter the next world. Frustrated by unfavorable court hearings, the Chumash and their allies mobilized a year-long occupation of the disputed site, eventually forcing the energy company to abandon its plan. The Point Conception Occupation was a landmark event in the cultural revitalization of the Chumash people and a turning point in the life of Pilulaw Khus, the Chumash activist and medicine woman whose firsthand narrations comprise this volume. Scholar Yolanda Broyles-González provides an extensive introductory analysis of Khus’s narrative. Her analysis explores “re-Indianization” and highlights the newly emergent Chumash research of the last decade. In the world of book publishing, this volume from a traditional Chumash woman elder is a first. It puts a 20th (and 21st) century face, name, identity, humanity, personality, and living voice on the term Chumash.

In this volume scholars from around the world read the story of the Earth in major Wisdom Traditions using the ecojustice principles outlined in Volume 1, 'Readings from the Perspective of Earth'. These readings uncover a range of fresh perspectives about Earth in seeking to discover where the voices of Earth are suppressed or heard in the Wisdom texts. Some texts reveal an ecokinship between Earth and Wisdom. Texts from Job challenge a cosmic model that gives priority to heaven over Earth. Still others challenge the mandate to dominate in Genesis 1.28. In many texts, Wisdom provides a vehicle for a new kinship with Earth. Comtributors include Jenny Wightman, Hendrik Viviers, Carole Fontaine, Izak Spangenberg, Alice Sinnott, Willie van Heerden, Katherine Dell, Dale Patrick, Marie Turner and Laura Hobgood-Oster.
