Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe puts images centre stage and argues for the agency of the visual in the construction of Europe’s east as a socio-political and cultural entity. This book probes into the discontinuous processes of mapping the eastern European space and imaging the eastern European body. Beginning from the Renaissance maps of Sarmatia Europea, it moves onto the images of women in ethnic dress on the pages of travellers’ reports from the Balkans, to cartoons of children bullied by dictators in the satirical press, to Cold War cartography, and it ends with photos of protesting crowds on contemporary dust jackets. Studying the eastern European ‘iconosphere’ leads to the engagement with issues central for image studies and visual culture: word and image relationship, overlaps between the codes of othering and self-fashioning, as well as interaction between the diverse modes of production specific to cartography, travel illustrations, caricature, and book cover design. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, visual culture, and central Asian, Russian and Eastern European studies.

At a time when the region of Central and Eastern Europe is considered a dominant example of democratic backsliding with authoritarian tendencies, this monograph aims to provide a critical approach to minority issues. By carving out the philosophical implications of the notion of subalternity, Trupia draws particularly on Antonio Gramsci’s philosophy of praxis and his scholarly legacy in order to debunk societal models of liberal multiculturalism and their hegemonic discourse. Scholarly interpretations of the collapse of communism and developments thereafter have tended to be primarily concerned with people's need to rid themselves of the communist system, of their past. The expectations, dreams, and hopes that ordinary Eastern Europeans had when they took to the streets in 1989, and have had ever since, have therefore been overlooked - and our understanding of the changes in post-communist Europe has remained incomplete. Focusing primarily on five key areas, such as the heritage of 1989 revolutions, ambivalence, disillusionment, individualism, and collective identities, this book explores the expectations and goals that ordinary Eastern Europeans had during the 1989 revolutions and the decade thereafter, and also the problems and disappointments they encountered in the course of the transformation. The analysis is based on extensive interviews with university students and young intellectuals in the Czech Republic, Eastern Germany and Estonia in the 1990s, which in themselves have considerable value as historical documents.

This edited volume proposes a theoretical reflection on the different artistic geographies of East-Central Europe (ECE) from an interdisciplinary perspective found at the intersection of art history, art and politics, and critical geography. Contributors argue that this multiplicity is a defining feature of the region. At the same time, chapters employ the concept of “plural geographies” and call for an equal geography, based on solidarity and an equal distribution of capital, which could allow plural geographies to exist and be described. The “multiple geographies” of ECE consider the perspective of local conditions and emphasize how this region was part of successive empires with an important ethnic diversity and changing borders, giving it historical layers and multicultural characteristics. The recent events of the Russo-Ukrainian warfare confirm violently that borderlands and borderland societies constitute vital parts of topographically as well as simultaneously culturally determined and discursively shaped East-Central European spatial spheres. This volume approaches this topic in a variety of case studies, spanning from Western border regions like Silesia and the former inner-German border between Thuringia and Northern Bavaria to the Eastern outposts of the Habsburg Empire in Galicia and Bukovina. These borderlands depict collectively experienced spaces of representation, allowing certain insights into the histories of society and transfer. By analyzing transdisciplinary concepts of identity construction, transcultural, and urban spheres, the gathered articles contribute to milieu, remembrance, and identity studies. The presented case studies enrich the established methodological approaches by transcending the geographically connotated term space and by highlighting the artificial, communicative, and cultural character of various borderland regions. Thus, borderland societies in East-Central Europe exceed existing notions of concepts like Heterotopias or lieux de mémoire by contributing as entangled constructs of nation, empire and society to postcolonial area studies.

During much of the Cold War, physical escape from countries in the Eastern Bloc was a nearly impossible act. There remained, however, possibilities for other socialist escapes, particularly time spent free from party ideology and the mundane routines of everyday life. The essays in this volume examine sites of socialist escapes, such as beaches, campgrounds, nightclubs, concerts, castles, cars, and soccer matches. The chapters explore the effectiveness of state efforts to engineer society through leisure, entertainment, and related forms of cultural programming and consumption. They lead to a deeper understanding of state-society relations in the Soviet sphere, where the state did not simply "dictate from above" and inhabitants had some opportunities to shape solidarities, identities, and meaning.
