Hi there. That's me, Dominic, on the cover: sixty-four years old, a granddad, the proud owner of a bus pass, and a man looking forward to receiving the state pension on his next birthday. Although I like to feel well and carry a shape that I'm comfortable with, what you see can be been achieved with nothing more than my enjoyable and healthy diet, a barbell, two dumbbells, and a pair of legs.This book will explain everything, well perhaps not the meaning of life, but you get my drift. I will tell you how I condition my body and maintain my fitness. Everything, from my diet sheet, right through to my exercise and weights regime, will be described in detail.As for me, I always feel healthy and energised, rarely get colds, and look forward to every day. My B.M.I. is 22.2 and my body fat is 16.2%. My chest size is 40 inches and my waist size 30 inches. However, if you're beginning to think that I'm an obsessive, exercise nut, then you would be wrong. I enjoy a drink like the next man or woman. In fact, my way is the gentle way: a blueprint for life which can be followed by anyone, regardless of age or gender.But first let me emphasise that his book is not about going on a diet, it is about changing your diet and maintaining health and fitness for the duration of your life. Yes, you can use my methods to achieve that quick-fix, 'beach Adonis' look for your holidays, or 'knock 'em dead' appearance for your wedding, but here's the thing: why aim for such limited goals? Why strive for such short-term benefits when you can take healthy, happy steps for the rest of your life?However, this book is not about exercising until you feel nauseous; it is about exercising within your capability. This book is not about pumping iron until your nose bleeds; it is about slowly building up to a comfortable level of weight training. This book is not about eating a bland, limited diet that makes you feel depressed; it is about eating well and healthily with generous portion sizes.If you decide to follow the exact path I am about to set out for you, you will undertake a gradual and steady weight loss and experience a change in body shape similar to my own if you are a male, or an approximate level of leanness and shape if you are a woman. The heavier you are, the quicker the weight will fall away, but everyone regardless of their starting weight or shape will see and feel real benefits within one month of the commencement of this 'design for life.'To give you an example of what will occur, I will explain briefly how it worked for me. Three years ago, I weighed 13 stones 12 pounds (194 pounds), and my weight curve was ever upwards. At 5 feet 10 inches tall, I realised that something had to be done to check this steady weight gain and improve my overall condition and health. The result, within one year, was what you see on the front of this book: a healthy man approaching his mid-sixties with a lean body shape and a weight of 11 stones 2 pounds (156 pounds). Whilst continuing with a totally satisfying diet I had lost 38 pounds - that's the equivalent in weight, by the way, of 19 bags of sugar. Try carrying that around for any distance!And here's the thing: once I had reached 156 pounds my body seemed to know that it had reached its optimum weight. From then on, everything stabilised, and my weight has remained within a couple of pounds of this optimum since then, during which time I have followed the system explained in this book.In conclusion to this introduction, I will say that if what I have described appeals to you, and if you want to make a real difference to how you look and how you feel, then please read on because everything is explained in enough detail to set you upon the exact path which I happily continue with.
