This provocative book explores how ancient notions about the fat body and the glutton in western culture both challenge and confirm ideas about what it means to be overweight and gluttonous today. People in the ancient western world made a distinction between being fat and being a glutton, even when they valued self-control and criticized excessive behavior. Examining many works of early western cultures, this book shows how ancient views both confirm and challenge our contemporary assumptions about fat bodies and gluttons. Eating to Excess: The Meaning of Gluttony and the Fat Body in the Ancient World explores the historical roots of the symbolic relationship between fatness, gluttony, and immorality in western culture. It includes chapters on Greek philosophy, medicine, and physiognomy; Greek and Roman popular culture; early Christianity; and the development of gluttony as one of the seven deadly sins. By examining ancient ideas about gluttony and fat bodies, the author offers new insight into what it means to be human in the western world.

Because of these powerful underlying circumstances, America's strongest policy response, both to climate change and obesity, will be adaptation rather than mitigation. As the damaging consequences of climate change become manifest, America will not impose adequate measures to reduce fossil fuel consumption, attempting instead to protect itself from storms and sea-level rise through costly infrastructure upgrades. In response to the damaging health consequences of obesity, America will opt for medical interventions and physical accommodations, rather than the policy measures that would be needed to induce better diets or more exercise. These adaptation responses will generate serious equity problems, both at home and abroad. Responding to obesity with medical interventions will fall short for those in America most prone to obesity - racial minorities and the poor - since these groups have never enjoyed adequate access to quality health care.

Obesity rates have reached an all-time high, with some reports stating that there are over 600 million people worldwide that can be classified as obese, and many, many more as overweight. These figures are alarming, representing a global epidemic that heralds a health crisis the likes of which few of us can truly comprehend. Excess weight can lead to diabetes, heart problems, cancer and more. The reasons so many are overweight are numerous, yet a leading cause is binge eating. Binge eating is defined as the act of eating to excess, either in a single sitting or over a short period. This is often done in private, and is commonly a side effect of restrictive dieting. Many diets, designed to help people lose weight, actually have the opposite effect, creating a physiological need to fill the void with foods on the restricted or banned list - foods that are often full of fat, calories, sodium and preservatives. This pendulum of losing and gaining weight manufactures the perfect environment for poor health, and even more weight gain. Fortunately, there is a solution. It is not found in a diet, a pill or even an exercise regime. The answer is already with you, and simply requires changing your mind. This book revolutionizes the concept of losing weight, and our relationship with food. By thinking of food differently and realizing that no foods should ever truly be off limits, we can set ourselves free from the cage of dieting, stop binge eating and discover the thin person inside... by thinking like one.

Research and Treatment in the Psychobiology of Bulimia Nervosa 1 2 K. M. Pirke and W. Vandereycken When we were preparing this book, the main purpose was to gather the latest in sights from both basic and clinical research in bulimic disorders. The burgeoning scientific interest in eating disorders forced us to restrict the focus in such a way that attention was only paid to psychobiological aspects of (disturbed) nutrition and be havior. This implied that other important aspects, like sociocultural and familial fac tors, had to be excluded. But it turned out that even with such a restricted scope the subject was not an easy one. A review of the contributions to this volume clearly shows that our present understanding of bulimia nervosa is still very small. Reviewing the hypothalamic and especially neuroendocrine regulation of nutrient balance, Bray has emphasized the importance of the autonomic nervous system in regulating food intake and energy expenditure. The role of insulin, adrenal steroids, gonadal steroids, and growth hormone in modulating nutrient intake and storage were discussed. The studies by Jimerson et aI. , Schweiger et aI. , and Fichter et al. show that all these factors are altered in bulimic patients, indicating that the whole system of regulating food intake and storage is severely disturbed in bulimia nervosa. Evidence has been presented that neurotransmitter alterations may occur in bulimia: Jimerson et al.

Have you ever dreamed of a weight loss program where you can eat as much as you want of all those things that you crave and still lose excess body fat? This dream program is now yours. This is an ad libitum program where you lose fat because of what you eat and not because of what you limit. You will discover through personal experience that there is no need to reduce calories or limit food groups to eliminate excess body fat. You will also obtain targeted fat loss since more fat will be lost from the waistline than from other parts of the body. Even more important, you will learn to think, feel and act in a different way around food. No magical remedies are promised and no miracle pills are promoted. Only through a sensible program and disciplined attitude will you be able to permanently rid yourself of excess fat. The book is divided into four parts. The first part explains why traditional diets are useless for long term weight loss, and how they may even worsen the problem. The second part presents a general outline of proven ways to permanently lose excess fat. The third part introduces a program which will not only help you nourish your body and lose excess fat; it will also reshape you to express your maximum genetic potential. The last part answers frequent questions made by my patients in relationship to this program. The philosophy of this program is the following: It is not what you eat in excess but what you are lacking in your daily menu that ruins your perfect metabolic balance and favors accumulation of excess body fat.
