Ecce Mulier begins with a presentation of the existential factors and movements of Nietzsche's soul during his early life. The author discusses his childhood, adolescence, and early adult years--represented by his natal home, early childhood, boarding school, studies in Bonn and Leipzig, practice in Basel, and fundamental and pivotal interpersonal relationships. She focuses particularly on the subjective life of that period, represented by Nietzsche's early poems, reflections in his first autobiographical works, personal letters and initial writings, as well as the symbols of his dreams and hallucinations as reported by Nietzsche himself. Dr. Ostfeld de Bendayan continues with Nietzsche's phase as a solitary wanderer, marked by the crucial breakup with Wagner and giving up of his professorship in Basel at the end of the 1870s. Here, she reveals the "human, all too human" man in his relationship with the feminine, using his experiences during continuous journeys and his psychological approach to the imagery found in Nietzsche's most significant creative works. Finally, the author offers evidence of the enactment of the Dionysus and Ariadne myth and the way Nietzsche is consumed eventually by living his own myth unconsciously: "In such instances, the personal domain of choice and conscious differentiation has been lost, thus producing a life lived out on an archetypal and not human level. This catalogue describes MSS 1-247 and 298 in the Chapter Library of Lincoln Cathedral, plus ten former Lincoln MSS now elsewhere. About half of the MSS were part of the cathedral's medieval Library; nearly all the rest came therebefore the late seventeenth century. Among the MSS, which date from the eighth to the early sixteenth century, are biblical commentaries and sermons, works of pastoral theology and an important corpus of Middle English texts, including the famous Thornton Romances. A group of MSS written at the Cathedral c.1100 is notable for its distinctive decoration. The Catalogue is preceded by a history of the Cathedral Library, based on the rich documentaryevidence, which includes two medieval catalogues. The plates illustrate bindings, ownership marks, important decoration and noteworthy script, including samples from all signed and dated books.

Analyzing previously unpublished sermons, Katherine Jansen uses the lens of medieval preaching to examine the mendicant friars' transformation of Mary Magdalen, a shadowy gospel figure, into an emblem of action and contemplation, a symbol of vanity and lust, a model of perfect penance, and the embodiment of hope and salvation. She draws on diverse historical sources to reveal the laity's devotion to Mary Magdalen, which departed significantly from the friars' image of the saint, signaling a major development in popular religious practice and personal piety. Finally, the author comprehensively addresses the question of the House of Anjou's alliance with the Magdalen, and illuminates the relationship between politics and sanctity in southern France and Italy.
