This book explores the growing spatial inequality in contemporary cities, and the opportunity of reframing the role of public open space as a tool of inclusion in a context of an increasing economic gap between the urban poor and rich. The first part outlines the geographical and theoretical frames of reference, which are then tested in the analysis of a case study: Cape Town. This city in South Africa was selected since its spatial aspects of separation are particularly evident due to the legacy of both apartheid and modernism. The examination of the policies of the City of Cape Town confirms the rising attention to public space since the 1990s. This slow progress of desegregation is tested through a critical study of one of the most disadvantaged areas of the city, Khayelitsha. The book explores the relevance and impact of an urban-design project, and reframes the role of public open space not only as a tool for restructuring the apartheid city, but also for reinterpreting other fragmented contemporary cities.

Possenti processi di urbanizzazione stanno modificando a un ritmo incalzante gli scenari sociali, culturali ed economici dell’Africa. Si tratta di un fenomeno di enorme rilevanza non solo per il continente africano e per gli studi africanistici, ma più in generale per le dinamiche globali cui stiamo assistendo negli ultimi decenni. Il fenomeno chiama in causa una molteplicità di approcci, imponendo la collaborazione e il confronto di diverse discipline: storia, antropologia, geografia, economia, politologia, urbanistica, diritto, per citarne solo alcuni. Per favorire un ampio confronto interdisciplinare, il Centro Piemontese di Studi Africani (CSA) ha organizzato – in collaborazione con l’Associazione Studi Africani in Italia (ASAI), l’Università e il Politecnico di Torino – il convegno “L’Africa delle città. Economie, popolazioni, culture” (Torino, Palazzo del Rettorato, 16-17 ottobre 2015), che ha visto la partecipazione di più di cinquanta studiosi appartenenti a diverse discipline, distribuiti in una decina di panel tematici. Questo volume presenta contributi rielaborati a partire da tali iniziative, messi a disposizione del pubblico per alimentare il dibattito relativo alle dinamiche di cambiamento in atto nel continente africano. Una riflessione che risulta cruciale anche per la comprensione delle migrazioni in gran parte provenienti dall’Africa, che da alcuni decenni investono il nostro paese.

Il tema del controllo manageriale è strettamente collegato alla duplice esigenza, tipica di ogni istituzione sociale, di orientare e monitorare le proprie performance ponendo le condizioni per il loro conseguimento. Sulla base di tali premesse nasce il presente volume con l’intento di fornire uno spaccato su una molteplicità di dimensioni in cui il controllo manageriale e gli indicatori di perfomance possono essere indagati ed applicati. Da una parte, infatti, lungo il tempo il controllo manageriale è stato oggetto di numerosi e fruttuosi contributi nella letteratura manageriale e organizzativa; dall’altra, la portata della sua applicabilità si è progressivamente estesa al di là dei confini organizzativi, nel senso che la sua logica e i suoi principi hanno ispirato soluzioni per così dire “analogiche” in contesti ben più ampi di quelli riferibili alla singola organizzazione. Con tale spirito, il volume accoglie dodici approfonditi contributi di cui sono coautori ricercatori ed esponenti del mondo manageriale pubblico e privato. L’eterogenea ma complementare provenienza degli Autori riteniamo sia un punto di forza della curatela nel proporre molteplici, e auspichiamo costruttive, chiavi di lettura del fenomeno del controllo manageriale.

The book collects the proceedings of the First National Conference promoted and organized by the Center ‘Planning Viable Sustainability with Emerging Regions’ (PVS), Department of Planning, Design, Technology of Architecture (PDTA), Sapienza University of Rome in March of 2014. La Conferenza, così come il libro, è stata organizzata in due sessioni parallele. “Risorse & Pubblico” che raccoglie i contributi sulle forme e i modi d’uso delle risorse per promuovere processi di pianificazione, progettazione, produzione e consumo a favore dello sviluppo delle comunità locali e rurali. “Bisogni & Valorizzazione” che raccoglie i contributi sugli strumenti e le strategie per trattare bisogni relativi all’abitare, all’architettura sociale, alla riqualificazione urbana, allo sviluppo culturale e produttivo nonché quelli sui processi di valorizzazione di trasformazione e sviluppo delle città e dei territori. Nella convinzione che ci siano ancora poche occasioni di riflessione, scambio e confronto sulle pratiche e gli interventi realizzati nel cosiddetto 'terzo settore’, il libro è l’occasione per aprire una discussione con esperti, professionisti e operatori sulle attività dei pianificatori, degli architetti e dei designer italiani che operano in tali ambiti.
