An ECG, or electrocardiogram, is a simple test that records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. It is commonly used to detect abnormal heart rhythms and investigate the cause of chest pains. It is important for clinicians to recognise and interpret ECG patterns accurately to ensure correct diagnosis and effective treatment. This fifth edition has been fully revised to provide the latest advances in ECG technology and its use in clinical diagnosis. Beginning with an overview of heart anatomy and physiology, the following chapters discuss the basics of reading an ECG, and normal and abnormal readings, covering most of the possible changes in ECG pattern that may be seen in daily practice. The final sections explain ECG interpretation and diagnosis of cardiac disorders. Enhanced by images of ECG readings, this new edition includes a comprehensive glossary and suggestions for further reading. Key points Fully revised, new edition providing latest advances in ECG technology In depth coverage of normal and abnormal readings Explains ECG interpretation and diagnosis of cardiac disorders in detail Features comprehensive glossary and suggestions for further reading

Over the last century the ECG has been used by clinicians to make major clinical decisions with regard to electric pacing, the use of thrombolytic drugs in acute myocardial infarction and the timing of surgery. In conjunction with a chest X-ray and the echocardiogram it is a fundamental part of the initial investigation of a patient with suspected heart disease. These electrical squiggles have always been difficult for students to understand. In part the problem has been that the formatting of the ECG has only become standard in the last two decades. Some important books have not provided the full twelve-lead ECG. On occasion the interpretation of the ECG has been related to complex explanations of the shapes of the electrical signals. For the practising physician much of the interpretation is a matter of pattern recognition.

Offers a guide for a complete understanding of the disease and conditions most frequently revealed in ECGs recorded in the acute, critical, and emergency care settings Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine offers an authoritative guide to ECG interpretation that contains a focus and perspective from each of the three primary areas of medical care: acute care, critical care and emergency care. It can be used as a companion with the book ECGs for the Emergency Physician I & II (by Mattu and Brady) or as a stand-alone text. These three books can be described as a cumulative EGG reference for the medical provider who uses the electrocardiogram on a regular basis. Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine includes sections on all primary areas of ECG interpretation and application as well as sections that highlight use, devices and strategies. The medical content covers acute coronary syndromes and all related issues, other diseases of the myocardium, morphologic syndromes, toxicology and paediatrics; dysrhythmias will also be covered in detail. This important resource: • Goes beyond pattern recognition in ECGs to offer a real understanding of the clinical syndromes evidenced in ECGs and implications for treatment • Covers the indications, advantages and pitfalls of the use of ECGs for diagnosis in all acute care settings, from EMS to ED to Critical Care • Examines the ECG in toxic, metabolic and environmental presentations; critical information for acute care clinicians who need to be able to differentiate ODs, poisoning and other environmental causes from MI or other cardiac events • Facilitates clinical decision-making Written for practicing ER, general medicine, family practice, hospitalist and ICU physicians and medical students, Electrocardiogram in Clinical Medicine is an important book for the accurate interpretation of EGG results.

The ECG Made Practical is a clinically-orientated book, showing how the electrocardiogram can help in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with symptoms suggesting cardiovascular disease. The underlying philosophy of this Seventh Edition remains that the ECG has to be interpreted in the light of the patient’s history and physical examination, thus the book is organised in chapters according to a patient’s symptoms. Clinically-orientated with a quick reference list of cardiovascular conditions Builds on the basic knowledge outlined in the classic ECG Made Easy Emphasises the individuality of every ECG and uses full 12-lead ECG recordings to provide a realistic reproduction of the clinical environment. The unique page size allows presentation of 12-lead ECGs across a single page for clarity. Each chapter begins with a brief account of the relevant history and examination and ends with a short account of what might be done once the ECG has been interpreted. The ECG is a vital part of diagnosis and prolonged ambulatory ECG recording is now commonplace. This Seventh Edition includes a greater focus on ambulatory monitoring and the newer monitoring devices, while developments in pacing systems and defibrillators are described.

For every physician that interprets ECGs, there is great need to understand a vast amount of information regarding the technique. That the basics of the technique have changed little over the last 100 years means that there is a huge amount of subtle detail that must be learnt to enable its effective use as a diagnostic test. The ECG technique is critical for deciding upon further diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions (notably coronary angiography, PTCA, stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting, pacemaker insertion, ablation, electroconversion etc). Without attaining the skills to practice the ECG procedure and knowledge of its diagnostic value - skills often overlooked during medical training - physicians will be unlikely to use it to the benefit of their patients.
