In this thousand-year chronicle of a lost tribe of Israel, a king labors with all his heart to serve his people, and prophets of God lead the faithful into battle, defending home and family against hoards of plundering, murderous invaders. Based on the prophesies of Isaiah, this book is both Hebrew and Christian, tying the two traditions together in history. It bears a powerful message with promises from an ancient people. From Jerusalem around 700 BCE, the prophet Isaiah wrote, " If you are willing and obedient you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel you will be devoured by the sword, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it." His words are the moral of this story. The storyline follows the devotion of an ancient people to write the book and leave a testament of their experience. The people saw themselves as part of Isaiah's tapestry of visions. They connected their own lives to events that the prophet foretold, as validation of their extreme journeys and experiences. Isaiah and other Hebrew prophets are quoted throughout the book. A lone survivor placed their record like a seed in the ground sixteen hundred years ago. Now the words of the book speak out of the ground, just as Isaiah foretold, opening the eyes and ears of millions who read it and value it as a sacred book. Echoes From Jerusalem is a complete abridgment of the 190 year-old Book of Mormon. This abridgment is less than 50% of the original book, but covers most of the material and is true to the original wording. Passages are cut and stitched together and have been slightly reordered, making the book more linear, helping the reader complete a cover-to-cover experience, and consider the book as a whole. It is rewritten into paragraph form, and makes new divisions on chapters, to imitate the style of a historical novel. Significant changes are made to the punctuation to help improve sentence and paragraph structure, without changing the words or meaning. All of this is meant to improve reader comprehension.

Clearly, Paul was violating the long-established guidelines for receiving Gentiles into fellowship. The circumcision party had enough clout within the growing community of believers to necessitate a formal hearing with the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. They insisted that the writings of Moses were binding upon anyone who wished to have a relationship with one true God. The debate was lengthy, detailed, and heated. We can imagine what much of the discussion was since the disagreement spilled out beyond the confines of that momentous meeting. We are motivated to note those disagreements in much of Paul’s writings. Distant Echoes invites the reader to observe as the apostles and elders grappled with the issues. Even after an arduous effort, the decision letter published by the leaders was not universally accepted. The echoes of their debate continue to ripple through the Christian community today. The questions continue to be considered, and answers contested. In the final analysis, what does God require of us for sustaining our relationship with him? What standard do we use to come to a conclusion? If we are to include the Old and New Testaments as a guide for our Christian lifestyle, which parts do we accept as binding? What principle do we use to determine which portions to include or exclude? Are we willing to use the letter published in Jerusalem as our primary guide for acceptance of ourselves and others?
