The collection of Burmese art housed at the Denison Museum in Granville, Ohio, USA, includes more than 1,500 objects dating from the late first millennium AD through the twentieth century. While particularly strong on textiles originating with minority groups in Burma, it also showcases Buddha images, lacquer objects, works on paper, manuscripts, wood carvings, and pieces made from bronze, silver, and ivory. Eclectic Collecting is both a catalogue of the collection and a scholarly examination of Burmese art.

Museum Archetypes and Collecting in the Ancient World offers a broad, yet detailed analysis of the phenomenon of collecting in the ancient world through a museological lens. In the last two decades this has provided a basis for exciting interdisciplinary explorations by archaeologists, art historians, and historians of the history of collecting. This compendium of essays by different specialists is the first general overview of the reasons why ancient civilizations from Archaic Greece to the Late Classical/Early Christian period amassed objects and displayed them together in public, private and imaginary contexts. It addresses the ranges of significance these proto-museological conditions gave to the objects both in sacred and secular settings.

But it is only recently that collecting became possible for everyone, not just the very rich. Indeed, collecting has never been more popular, as the rise of art fairs, antique fairs, television programs devoted to finding treasures in your attic and much more attests. And not only is collecting fun, it could be potentially very profitable, too. But where to start? These days everything is collectable, from Old Masters to 1950s kitchenalia and it can be bewildering when you start out. And not just when you start out. Even experienced collectors need some help and guidance and How To Collect Art provides exactly this. Author and collecting expert Virginia Blackburn takes you through everything you need to know, tackling not only mainstream fields such as paintings, furniture, china and statuary, but through antiquities, modern sculpture, Sailors’ Valentines, street art, and much more. This is a comprehensive look at many and varied fields of collecting, for amateur and professional alike. Virginia also explains how to educate yourself in your chosen field, and where to go to find the art you buy, covering galleries, auctions, degree shows and more. She explains how, when and where to bargain, looks at ways of displaying your collection and helps you get into the mindset of a collector. Today’s libraries and museums are heavily indebted to the passions and obsessions of numerous individual collectors who devoted their lives to amassing collections of books, manuscripts, artworks, and other culturally significant objects. Collecting the Past brings together the latest research on a wide range of significant British collectors from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, including Hans Sloane, Sarah Sophia Banks, Thomas Phillipps, Sydney Cockerell, J. P. Morgan Jr., Alfred Chester Beatty and R. E. Hart. Contributors to the volume examine the phenomenon of collecting in a variety of settings and across a range of different materials. Considering the aims and motives that led these collectors to assemble such remarkable collections, the book also examines the history of these collections after the collector’s death. Particular attention is given to the often complicated relationship between collectors and the public institutions that subsequently came to house their collections. Situated within the framework of cultural collecting more generally, this book offers an authoritative series of essays on key collectors. Collecting the Past should be most interesting to researchers, academics and postgraduate students engaged in the study of museum studies, book history, manuscript studies, museum history, library history and the history of collecting. Professionals in libraries, museums and galleries will also find the volume of great interest.

The history of the Netherlands in the seventeenth century cannot be adequately told without considering ministers’ understanding of print, and how they used print to encourage godliness and the nature of their personal libraries. This study is built upon an examination of 234 auction catalogues of ministerial collections, nearly all that are known to survive, and the transcription of fifty-five of these catalogues. Libraries were possessions of central importance to the ministers who owned them. Knowing the kinds of print with which ministers interacted provides us with valuable insights into the daily life of a minister and the culture of the era. So, what books did these central theological figures own and how did they use them?
