Excerpt from Eclectic Shorthand: Writing by Principles Instead of Arbitrary SignsThis system of shorthand writing has been before the public long enough to either demonstrate or refute the claim that it is the easiest to learn, the simplest in struct ure, the briefest, and yet the fullest phonetic writing of the language thatohas been devised, and it still lives.Its development has been the result of a single seed thought. In 1878, while teaching the alphabet of Taki graphy, I became strongly impressed with the fact that there was no law of motion in the phonographic alphabets, such as in the written Roman alphabet, and set about seeking a more facile and cursive set of characters to represent the alphabet for purposes of shorthand writing.In writing the Roman alphabet, the motion of the pen is upward and downward alternately, except an occasional stroke to the right, which always occurs after an upward stroke. Not a line of engraving, but everything is as if fresh from the pen of the rapid writer. Written at a rapid rate, they represent such work as is of the greatest value to the learner, because they are easy and rapid, instead of labored and slowly engraved out lines. The learner will see in these sample pages of a pure, natural, easy style of reportorial short-hand precisely what he must be able to do, and the reading of these will be in effect the same as reading his own perfectly written verbatim notes. The last vestige of vertical characters is eliminated from this edition, even the vertical ticks. All the characters now are either left oblique, right oblique, or horizontal, and so similar to the movements of long-hand, to which the hand is already accustomed, that the ease with which they are written is worthy of attention. The author feels safe in character izing it a free-hand short-hand. The modifications in characters and contractions which have been made are those which have appeared in The Ex ponent during the last two years, and have been generally adopted by writers of the system.
