I boschi di neoformazione si formano su terreni in passato utilizzati come pascoli, prati o coltivi e oggi abbandonati. Per questo motivo, occupano progressivamente il paesaggio delle valli alpine, ridisegnandolo. Il libro sintetizza i vari aspetti dell’ecologia di queste nuove foreste: gli aspetti storici, descrivendone la “preistoria” legata alle vicende macroclimatiche, e l’espansione più recente, legata soprattutto, ma non solo, allo spopolamento della montagna; gli aspetti legati alla gestione, alla vegetazione e alla sua dinamica e agli effetti che ne derivano sugli equilibri dell’ecosistema. Oltre a questi tre elementi (storia, vegetazione, gestione) si fa riferimento anche alla flora minore e alla fauna, elementi che suscitano sempre maggiore interesse sia da parte degli esperti sia dei visitatori, e che contribuiscono a fornire un quadro più generale dell’ambiente in cui si sviluppano i boschi di neoformazione. Non manca, inoltre, una precisa analisi delle direttive tutelari europee, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la fauna e gli habitat: emerge dunque che queste norme non sono volte esclusivamente a porre dei limiti all’uso indiscriminato del suolo e del territorio, ma mirano anche a proporre nuovi metodi e prospettive per la loro valorizzazione, sia naturalistica che turistica. Il libro si rivolge innanzitutto ai tecnici e ai gestori dei boschi pubblici o privati, a coloro cioè che sono desiderosi di conoscere i nuovi metodi di gestione, pianificazione, e valorizzazione dei boschi di neoformazione, divenuti ormai una parte rilevante del patrimonio forestale alpino. In secondo luogo si rivolge a quegli studenti che sentono il desiderio di documentarsi sui metodi e sui criteri d’interpretazione ecologica ed ecosistemica di queste comunità forestali, ancora poco studiate e trattate solo marginalmente nei manuali di selvicoltura. Infine si rivolge a tutti coloro che vivono quotidianamente a contatto con il bosco o che, da esso affascinati, lo visitano saltuariamente. Fornisce loro uno strumento accessibile ma preciso, per interpretare una nuova tipologia forestale e paesaggistica.

Esso si traduce nel ricorso a strumenti di indagine e di procedure valutative funzionali a: · mettere in luce opportunità e limiti da considerare nella gestione dei territori forestali al fine di garantire la durevolezza e riproducibilità dei beni e servizi da essi erogati, dalla scala locale a quella di paesaggio; ciò tenuto anche conto della varietà di regimi di protezione delle aree forestali applicati nel nostro Paese; · garantire la sostenibilità ecologica delle trasformazioni territoriali e, dunque, anche la salvaguardia dei sistemi forestali, mediante strumenti specifici di valutazione e di tutela ambientale integrata. In relazione a ciò uno dei principali obiettivi didattici (e questo rappresenta una novità, almeno con riferimento al panorama della letteratura di settore in Italia) è il tentativo di integrare in un quadro organico e di lettura non eccessivamente specialistica i vari aspetti ecologici, normativo-procedurali e tecnico-gestionali coinvolti.

Ozone is a highly oxidative compound formed in the lower atmosphere (from gases originating to a large extent from anthropogenic sources) by photochemistry driven by solar radiation. Owing to its highly reactive chemical properties, ozone is harmful to vegetation, materials and human health. In the troposphere, ozone is also an efficient greenhouse gas. This report summarizes the results of a multidisciplinary analysis to assess the effects of ozone on health. The analysis indicates that ozone pollution affects the health of most of the populations of the WHO European Region, leading to a wide range of health problems. The effects include some 21,000 premature deaths each year in 25 countries in the European Union on and after days with high ozone levels. Current policies are not sufficient to reduce ozone levels in the Region or their impact in the next decade.
