L’objectif principal de cette thèse est de décrire et comprendre l’écologie de serpents marins : les tricots rayés de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Ces serpents marins sont très particuliers : ils sont amphibies et dépendent à la fois du milieu marins pour se nourrir mais aussi fortement du milieu terrestre pour toutes les autres activités (digestion, mue, accouplement, ponte,...). L’utilisation de deux milieu de vie contrastés offre des opportunités rares pour comprendre comment l’écologie de ces animaux s’ajuste aux contraintes (synergiques ou antagonistes) qu’imposent les milieux terrestre et marin. La présence de deux espèces proches de tricots rayés vivant en sympatrie dans le lagon de Nouvelle-Calédonie (Laticauda laticaudata – le tricot rayé bleu et L. saintgironsi – le tricot rayé jaune) permet une approche comparative pour étudier l’écologie particulière de ces animaux, mais aussi pour comprendre les mécanismes permettant leur coexistence.

Dans l'imaginaire collectif des monstres marins, le serpent de mer tient une place de prédilection. Parfois d'une monstruosité légendaire, ou parfois assimilés aux dragons, les serpents de mer n'en sont pas moins des animaux bien réels, peu connus en Occident car absents de nos eaux maritimes. C'est cependant loin de cet univers imaginaire que nous entraîne l'auteur. Les serpents de mer sont ici étudiés scientifiquement tant dans leur classification taxinomique que dans leur répartition géographique, les régions tropicales des océans Indien et Pacifique, où ils occupent principalement le plateau continental. Les serpents marins sont les plus aquatiques de tous les Reptiles ; en effet, le cycle de la plupart d'entre eux se déroule entièrement en mer, et la reproduction des espèces les plus évoluées ne nécessite plus aucun accès à la terre ferme. Dans une première partie, cet ouvrage nous propose une étude approfondie des données biologiques et éthologiques des serpents marins, puis, dans une seconde partie, est abordé le problème de la toxicité du venin de ces animaux.
