'While identifying two types of activity, namely econ-art and econ-science, he demonstrates why economists should acknowledge their artistic impulses and develop a more scientific conduct.' ARTbibliographies Modern Historians of economic thought have long recognised the possibility that cultural influences might be important, but have never analysed them in any detail. In the first study of economics from the perspective of art history, Rick Szostak shows how the cultural influences identified by art historians have affected economic theory. He also reveals that not only has economic theory been informed by aesthetic considerations, but the very methods employed by economists are shown to serve primarily artistic goals. Professor Szostak assesses the extent of these cultural and aesthetic effects through a wide-ranging study of the development of surrealism, cubism and abstract art, juxtaposed with examples drawn from virtually every field of economics. Two types of endeavour are identified, Econ-Art and Econ-Science. Szostak argues that the pursuit of econ-science would be much aided if economists first recognised their artistic impulses, and then developed more scientific standards of conduct. As the first economist to thoroughly address the question of whether Economics is Art, Professor Szostak raises some important philosophical issues with this volume. The result is a controversial and scholarly, yet accessible, examination of the influence of both culture and aesthetic considerations on economics.

Should the arts receive public support? Can the arts survive in a modern capitalist society? Can economics shed light on the nature of public support, and whether there is a rationale for public intervention? This book undertakes to examine these questions as it explores the ways government and public resources are used to support the arts. This book applies a Veblenian approach to understanding economic development to investigate public support for the arts in an effort to determine whether this approach can elucidate economic rationales for public support. Divided into three parts, the first provides basic information on public support for the arts by surveying support in the United States and Australia. Part two includes a neoclassical overview of the topic while part three presents Veblen’s ideas on economic development. This book will be of interests to researchers concerned with cultural and institutional economics, as well as political economy.

Culture manifests itself in everything human, including the ordinary business of everyday life. Culture and art have their own value, but economic values are also constrained. Art sponsorships and subsidies suggest a value that exceeds market price. So what is the real value of culture? Unlike the usual focus on formal problems, which has 'de-cultured' and 'de-moralized' the practice of economics, this book brings together economists, philosophers, historians, political scientists and artists to try to sort out the value of culture. This is a book not only for economists and social scientists, but also for anybody actively involved in the world of the arts and culture.

Chicago Fundamentalism Ideology And Methodology In Economics written by Craig F Freedman and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-01 with Business & Economics categories.

Cold-war ideology infected the development of economics in ways its practitioners were often not fully aware. The Chicago counter-revolution against the dominant post-war triumph of Keynesian analysis had an essential subtext, a perceived struggle between freedom and collective slavery. Ideological objectives subsequently influenced methodological concerns, pushing economists to adopt the zero-sum tactics of the courtroom rather than the mutually beneficial manners of the senior common room. In these ideologically charged times, economists stopped reading opposing views carefully, seeking instead to dismiss, out of hand, uncongenial ideas. In this collection of previously published and new material, Craig Freedman examines the problem of ideology through the reflection cast by the architects of the Chicago counter-revolution, George Stigler and Milton Friedman. The second half of the volume demonstrates the legacy of these ideological fires, namely a profession where the methodology of careless reading and zero-sum exchanges have persisted and come to dominate.

This book provides an essential overview of the skills revolution. It presents key milestones of the changes in economic development in the past few decades and explains the motivation behind the rise of talent, as well as its importance for cities and economies.
